Malayalam cinema didn’t witness any blockbusters in July. But movies like Level Cross and Vishesham managed to pull crowds to theatres.
Mohanlal’s Devadoothan, which was re-released on 26 July after 24 years, became the talk of the town though. It evoked an overwhelming response from audiences and is running to packed houses everywhere, with screenings in 100 centres.
Sadly, there aren’t any major Malayalam films releasing in August 2024. The incessant rains in Kerala also seem to have become a concern for the filmmakers.
However, Asif Ali and Suraj Venjaramoodu’s Adios Amigo and Manju Warrier’s Footage are the anticipated films to be released in Malayalam in August 2024. These apart, Anand Menen’s Vaazha piqued the interest of the moviegoers with its freshness and content.
Further, there are a couple of interesting films that are set to entertain the Malayalam audience this August 2024, though. Here’s the list:
Adios Amigo has Asif Ali and Suraj Venjaramoodu joining hands together for the first time. The trailer, launched recently, gave the impression that it would be a hilarious ride.
The film is slated for release on 2 August but was postponed as a mark of respect to the people who died in the Wayanad landslides.
Asif Ali and Suraj Venjaramoodu, in different interviews, promised that Adios Amigo would be a fun-packed entertainer. Debutant Nahaz Nazar wielded the megaphone for the flick. Thankam wrote the script.
The makers are building anticipation for the film through funky promotional posters. The movie also features Shine Tom Chacko, Ganapathi, Althaf Salim, Jinu Joseph, Salim Hassan, Anagha, Muthumani, and Riaa Saira in prominent roles.
Ashiq Usman is producing Adios Amigo. The cinematography is by Jimshi Khalid and the editing is by Nishadh Yusuf. Gopi Sunder composed the music.
Footage is an experimental movie directed by Saiju Sreedharan. The makers recently released an intriguing trailer, featuring Manju Warrier, Vishak Nair, and Gayathri Ashok. Manju Warrier appears in the trailer at the end.
The Malayalam film is presented by Bollywood director Anurag Kashyap. In an Instagram video, the filmmaker said he was impressed after watching the Footage and decided to present it.
Vishak Nair and Gayathri Ashok appear as travel vloggers in the film. The trailer also suggests that they face some unexpected events, which change their lives.
The Malayalam film was planned for release on 2 August 2024. However, the makers postponed it due to heavy rains. They are yet to confirm the new release date.
Footage marks the directorial debut of editor Saiju Sreedharan. Saiju co-wrote the film with Shabna Mohammed. He also edited the movie. Sajiu is known for films like Kumbalangi Nights (2019), Android Kunjappan Ver 5.25 (2019), and Anjaam Pathiraa (2020).
Footage is Malayalam’s first Found Footage film. Found Footage is a technique where all or a substantial part of the work is presented as if it were film or video recordings recorded by characters in the story, and later “found” and presented to the audience.
The cinematography was handled by Shinoz. Bineesh Chandran and Saiju Sreedharan produced the flick, with Rahul Rajeev and Suraj Menon serving as co-producers. Martin Prakat Films is the distributor.
Bhavana’s new thriller, Hunt, will hit the screens on 9 August.
A new teaser of Shaji Kailas’s directorial, launched recently, revealed that the film will be a crime thriller with elements of horror.
The teaser showcases Bhavana as a forensic expert who investigates a series of murders. The supernatural elements made the teaser quite interesting.
Hunt was written by Nikhil Anand and produced by K Radhakrishnan. It marks the second collaboration between Shaji Kailas and Bhavana after their successful crime thriller Chinthamani Kolacase (2006), headlined by Suresh Gopi.
The other cast of Hunt includes Renji Panikkar, Chandhunath, Dain Davis, Anu Mohan, G Suresh Kumar, Ajmal Ameer, Rahul Madhav, Biju Pappan, Nandhu, and Vijayakumar.
The music was stored by Kailas Menon. Jackson Johnson was the cinematographer. Ajas Pukkadan was the editor. K Radhakrishnan was producing it under the banner of Goodwill Entertainments.
Actor Saiju Kurup has donned a producer’s hat for his forthcoming flick Bharathanatyam. Unveiling the first look of the Malayalam film, the makers also announced its release date—23 August 2024.
The first-look poster features its lead actors Saiju and Saikumar. Sharing the poster on his social media handle, Saiju wrote: “Dear Friends and Family, it’s with immense joy that I share the First Look Poster of my maiden production venture Bharathanatyam in collaboration with Thomas Thiruvalla Films. This long-standing desire has come to fruition due to the incredible amount of love and encouragement I’ve received from all of you over the past 19 years in my journey in the film industry.”
Bharathanatyam marks the directorial debut of Krishnadas Murali, who also penned the script. Kalaranjini, Sreeja Ravi, Swathi Das Prabhu, and Nandu Poduval, too, are part of the film.
The movie has cinematography by Bablu Aju, music by Samuel Aby, and editing by Shadeeque VB.
Meanwhile, Saiju Kurup will next be seen in Porattu Naadakam, scheduled to hit theatres on 9 August 2024.
The teaser of Vaazha-Biopic of A Billion Boys, unveiled last week, hinted at a wholesome entertainer. The teaser has several funny moments involving a group of teenage boys and their interesting encounters with their parents.
Vaazha has a young cast and crew. It is directed by Anand Menen of Gauthamante Radham (2020) fame. The Malayalam movie stars Jeomon Jyothir, Saaf Boi, Hashiree, Anuraj, Amith Mohan Rajeswari, Kottayam Nazeer, Siju Sunny, Noby Marcose, Basil Joseph, and Azees Nedumangad.
Filmmaker Vipin Das wrote its screenplay. He is well-known for making Jaya Jaya Jaya Jaya Hey (2022) and Guruvayoor Ambala Nadayil (2024).
Interestingly, Vipin Das is also producing this film under his banner WBTS Productions, in collaboration with Haris Desom, PB Anish, and Adarsh Narayan of Imagin Cinemas.
Aravind Puthussery and Kannan Mohan are the cinematographers. Babu Pillai is the art director.
Vaazha will hit the cinema halls on 15 August 2024.
