Malayalam actor R Subbalakshmi, popular for her grandmother roles, passes away

Malayalam actor R Subbalakshmi, who was also a noted musician, passed away at a hospital in Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala on November 30, Thursday.

She had been kept under treatment for a few days at the hospital, according to local reports.

R Subbalakshmi was 87. She is the mother of popular actor and dancer Thara Kalyan.

Popular in grandmother roles

The actress was known for her roles as the grandmother of protagonists in films. One of her best-remembered roles was in Dileep’s Kalyanaraman (2002), which became a turning point in her career.

She also became popular with her roles in films such as Thilakkam (2003) and Nandanam (2002). She has also acted in Vijay’s Beast (2021).

She acted in Tamil, Telugu and Hindi films. Her role in the Hindi movie Dil Bechara (2020) — the last film of actor Sushanth Singh Rajput, released after his death — was praised.

Early life

Her meeting with actor Siddique eased her entry into films. She debuted as an actress in Nandanam in 2002. She ended up acting in about 100 films.

Subbalakshmi was also popular in television advertisements. She was seen in advertisements for Colgate toothpaste.

She began her professional career with All India Radio in 1951. Before entering films, Subbalakshmi was a music and dance instructor at Jawahar Balabhavan.

She worked with All India Radio since 1951. She was the first woman composer of All India Radio from South India.

She also served as a dubbing artiste and conducted concerts. She was a part of some telefilms and albums as well.
