Identity starring Tovino Thomas, and Trisha is the first Malayalam release in 2025. A thriller with a good plot, the movie has the potential to attract the audience.

With Identity being the second collaboration of Akhil Paul and Anas Khan with Tovino after their successful movie Forensic (2022), the expectations are high. Let’s check how the movie fared.

Synopsis

Akhil Paul and Anas Khan are known for their investigation thrillers, and their new film Identity follows this tradition with a complex, interconnected plot. The story begins with the murder of Amar Philp (Arjun Radhakrishnan), and police officer Allen (Vinay Rai) is assigned to investigate.

Allen enlists the help of sketch artist Haran Shankar (Tovino Thomas) to create a drawing of the suspect. As the investigation unfolds, more characters are introduced. Haran has a tragic past, having suffered a difficult childhood and developed obsessive-compulsive personality disorder due to his strained relationship with his father.

Alisha (Trisha), a journalist who witnesses a murder, also becomes a key character and assists Haran in his investigation. The film’s intricate plot gives attention to the development of each character.

Anas Khan and Akhil Paul have crafted a layered script for Identity. The movie opens with a detailed explanation by the doctor character (Shammy Thilakan), and throughout the film, Haran provides more insights into the investigation and the plot. Revealing too much would be a spoiler.

The first half sets the tone for the main characters, while the second half introduces more characters, adding depth and intrigue to the story.

Tovino Thomas’s character undergoes many twists and remains pivotal from start to finish, with the writers providing him with the qualities of a hero.

The film offers detailed storytelling, from the investigation to a car chase. Extensive research is evident, especially in explaining the title Identity, the security of Indian airspace, and the special government wing involved.

The movie also delves into the health issues faced by Haran and Alisha, which play a key role in the plot. The investigation and its revelations make the movie engaging.

Technical aspects

The film boasts a talented technical team that enhances its quality. Chaman Chacko’s editing is a standout, with seamless shots that complement the script. The action sequences, including a thrilling car chase and flight scene, are breathtaking.

Cinematography by Akhil Paul adds depth to the film, capturing the diverse terrains where the story unfolds.

Jakes Bejoy’s music elevates the intense, edge-of-the-seat moments in this thriller.

Overall, the movie is a well-crafted piece of cinema, with the efforts of the twin directors evident on screen.
