Gokul Suresh says he lost a role in a film for questioning casting couch

There have been revelations about the casting couch and sexual favours prevalent in the Malayalam film industry following the publication of the Justice Hema Committee Report. Several junior artistes and young actors are opening up about their traumatic experiences.

Recently, Malayalam actor Gokul Suresh, the son of actor-politician Suresh Gopi, revealed that he too faced negative experiences in the industry. The Gaganachari (2024) actor shared that he lost a role in a film after speaking out against the casting couch.

During an interaction with the media, when asked about the allegations against actor Nivin Pauly, Gokul Suresh expressed concern that the allegations against Nivin Pauly and the alleged victim give the impression that both men and women can be affected by these problems.

“There is a misconception that only women face hardships in the film industry. But I have also faced challenges in the film industry, and these issues are not confined to women alone,” he added.

Elaborating further, Gokul Suresh highlighted that those who oppose the casting couch may also lose opportunities.

He also recalled an incident from his early days. “I faced a similar situation at the beginning. Although I addressed the issue directly with the person involved, I ultimately lost that film.”

The actor mentioned that social media made it easier for the public to become aware of such issues within the industry.

Further, Gokul Suresh Suresh felt that individuals who come forward with false allegations should be dealt with harshly. He noted that these issues are not exclusive to Malayalam cinema but are prevalent across other film industries as well, often on a much larger scale.

He also pointed out that such problems occur in various industries, not just in cinema.

Gokul Suresh was last seen in Gaganachari, directed by Arun Chandu. The actor is part of Mammootty’s upcoming movie Dominic and The Lady’s Purse, which marks Gautham Vasudev Menon’s Malayalam debut directorial.
