Unni Mukundan has a new release— Get Set Baby, following the phenomenal success of the action thriller Marco, is an entertainer with comedic elements.

In Get Set Baby, Unni Mukundan plays the lead role of a gynaecologist, similar to Anish Anwar’s Zachariyayude Garbinikal (2013), where Lal portrayed the role of a gynaecologist.

However, the movie bears more resemblance to the Bollywood film Dr. G (2021), which starred Ayushmann Khurrana, particularly due to its comedic elements.

Arjun starts his journey as an IVF specialist at a small hospital, eventually moving to a multi-specialty hospital. He later opens his own IVF clinic, showcasing his rise from a medical student to a successful doctor.

Meanwhile, we meet Swathi (Nikhila Vimal), a food vlogger with dreams of starting her own cloud kitchen. Swathi and Arjun meet when her friend visits for IVF treatment. They fall in love and get married. The first half ends with Arjun eagerly anticipating fatherhood.

The second half delves into Arjun’s emotional struggles, influenced by both professional and personal challenges. Suja (Surabhi Lakshmi) and Ravi (Sudheesh), a couple seeking treatment at the hospital enter Arjun’s life and play pivotal roles.

The movie also explores Arjun and Swathi’s relationship, as well as Arjun’s ego. Ultimately, the film concludes with a satisfying ending, as intended by the makers.

An entertaining story

Get Set Baby offers an engaging story aimed at being a feel-good entertainer. Directed by Vinay Govind, known for films like Kili Poyi and Kohinoor, it takes a fresh approach. The script by YV Rajesh blends comedy, romance, despair, and other cinematic elements, including catchy songs.

The movie is crafted for a family audience. Unni Mukundan and Nikhila Vimal make a great pair, excelling in both comedy and emotional scenes. The second half focuses more on emotional elements, which form the core of the story.

While Get Set Baby shares some similarities with Dr. G in its initial scenes, the plot is unique. It centres on IVF fertility centres, exploring the business side of treatments and how people spend money on them. The film also offers a satirical look at modern treatments. Notably, the male lead, an IVF specialist, isn’t portrayed negatively, which is a smart choice by the makers.

The movie’s emotional moments can be dramatic, but they are not overwhelming, maintaining the film’s flow.

Sam CS provides a fitting soundtrack with four songs that match the movie’s mood. The cinematography by Alex J Pulickal also delivers beautiful shots, mainly filmed in Kochi.

It was refreshing to see Unni Mukundan in a feel-good drama after his intense role in Marco. The movie gives him a chance to showcase his comedy skills, especially in the early scenes. As the story progresses, he transforms, delivering a strong performance overall.

Nikhila Vimal plays Swathi and fits well in the role. She performs admirably as a food vlogger, with her witty dialogues and humorous moments adding to the film’s charm. Her interaction with Arjun, especially when his ego is at play, is well-written.

Other key actors like Johny Antony, Farah Shibla, Sudheesh, Shyam Mohan, Muthumani, and Meera Vasudevan also had good roles.

The pairing of Surabhi Lakshmi and Sudheesh plays a crucial part in the film.
