‘Checkmate’ trailer promises an intriguing thriller, film to release on 9 August

The trailer of Anoop Menon’s new Malayalam film, Checkmate, has hinted at an engaging thriller. The two-minute-41-second trailer features Anoop Menon, Lal, and Rekha Harindran facing some unforeseen events.

The Checkmate trailer begins with killings and the drama unfolds with the audience being introduced to various elements in the story like revenge, betrayal, and greed—all through the game of chess.

Checkmate seems to have an intriguing plot and is billed as a medical thriller. It was initially slated for release on 8 August. But, through the trailer, the makers announced that it would be released on 9 August.

Along with the trailer, the makers also shared a new poster featuring Anoop Menon.

Until now, Checkmate did not evoke huge expectations from audiences but the trailer seems to have piqued curiosity.

In a social media post, Anoop Menon said, “Checkmate is the most expensive film of his career and it is entirely shot in New York and different parts of America.”

Sharing the first-look poster, he added that the movie was the love child of a group of super-talented American Malayalees. The first look came with the tagline: “Every move could be your last”.

Checkmate was written and directed by Ratish Sekhar. He also handled the cinematography and composed the music. The movie was shot in New York.

The film also features Rajalakshmi, and Anjali Mohanan in crucial roles. The technical crew includes Prejish Prakash as editor, Swapneel Batra as production designer, and BK Harinarayanan, Dhanya Suresh Menon, Joe Paul, and Vinayak Sasikumar as the lyricists.

Anoop Menon was last seen in Tovino Thomas’s Nadikar (2024). His upcoming projects include Manoj Palodan’s Ideem Minnalum alongside Dhyan Sreenivasan.
