Arun D. Jose, known for his previous successful films Jo & Jo and 18 Plus, is back with yet another entertainer — Bromance.
Released on Valentine’s Day, the film raised hopes of being another testament to the director’s skill in telling stories about youngsters.
This time, young actors Mathew Thomas, Arjun Ashokan, Mahima Nambiar, Shyam Mohan, and Sangeeth Prathap take on the lead roles in Bromance.
As the title suggests, the movie revolves around brotherhood and features elements of love, with multiple layers explored throughout the story.
Binto (Mathew Thomas) and Shinto (Shyam Mohan) are brothers with contrasting personalities. Binto, the younger one, is active on social media, creating memes, and is laid back, while Shinto works as a stock market trader, and is well-mannered.
In a twist, Shinto goes missing, and Binto is forced to travel to Kochi as he goes missing. What happened to Shinto? The movie revolves around this mystery and the events that lead to a search operation for him.
Shabeer Ali (Arjun Ashokan), Shinto’s close friend, also plays a key role in the movie. As the story progresses, many other characters are involved, including Aiswarya (Mahima Nambiar), a dentist and Shinto’s ex-lover. Hariharasudhan (Sangeeth Prathap), an ethical hacker, joins the group and helps track Shinto’s phone. Courier Babu, played by Kalabhavan Shahjohn, also becomes part of the story due to his connection with Shinto.
The group’s search leads them to Coorg, and after an eventful first half, the second half is set in this part of Karnataka. The big question: Will they find Shinto? That’s the main highlight of the movie.
The first half of Bromance focuses on events that highlight the personalities of Shinto and his brother Binto. The title suits the story, as Binto is determined to find his brother. His anger issues are presented in a way that resonates with the young audience.
There are some scenes with the police character, played by Binu Pappu, teasing Binto. However, these moments feel irrelevant and don’t match the film’s tone. Despite that, the movie has plenty of high-energy moments, with a script by Raveesh Nath and Thomas P Sebastian.
Mahima Nambiar’s use of Kasaragod slang has been well-received, adding humour to the film. The dynamic between Binto and Hariharasudhan shines in the comedy scenes.
Arun D Jose has a knack for making comedy connect with youth, and in Bromance, the actors deliver strong performances. As the story shifts to Virajpet in Karnataka, the setting changes, bringing more action scenes. The wedding day comedy of errors has been a hit with audiences.
Bromance’s cinematography by Akhil George is a major highlight. Song sequences like the Gen Z song and the wedding song stand out. The car chase scenes in Kochi and the fight sequences in the climax are key moments.
The songs and background score by Govind Vasantha elevate the film, resonating well with the youth, who are the target audience. The script plays an important role, as the theme of bromance has been explored in Malayalam films before.
However, the fresh treatment and story make it a complete entertainer. Editing by Chaman Chacko adds to Bromance’s appeal, making it a fun watch.
Bromance features a vibrant cast, including Arjun Ashokan, Mahima Nambiar, Mathew Thomas, Sangeeth Prathap, Shyam Mohan, and Kalabhavan Shahjohn in prominent roles.
Mathew Thomas delivers a great performance as Binto. His portrayal of anger issues adds intensity, making his performance stand out.
Mahima Nambiar, playing Aiswarya, has a significant role, with equal importance to the male characters. Her screen presence and dialogue delivery are commendable.
Arjun Ashokan, as Shabeer, starts with a subtle role but gains momentum in the climax. Revealing more would be a spoiler, but his performance works well for the film.
Shyam Mohan plays Shinto, a wise yet crooked character. He skillfully portrays different shades of his character, delivering a commendable performance after Premalu.
Sangeeth Prathap, as Hariharasudhan, brings humour to the film. His role is perfect for the young actor, making audiences laugh.
Kalabhavan Shahjohn, as Courier Babu, adds value with his strong performance and screen presence, making his character memorable.
Bromance is a fun-filled entertainer, with the performances of the young actors being the key elements of the film. It is a movie made purely for entertainment.
