Basil Joseph in Ponman

Actors Basil Joseph and Lijo Mol on Saturday, 1 February, opened up about the positive responses to their latest release Ponman, which tackles the complex issue of dowry and its societal impact.

Speaking at an event in Kochi, Basil Joseph discussed how the film takes a unique perspective on the dowry system, pointing out that it doesn’t just focus on women as victims but also highlights the burden it places on men. He explained, “Ponman speaks about dowry from the perspective of men too, as the men in the family are the ones who have to provide the gold and money to meet dowry demands.”

Joseph added, “Typically, women are shown as the victims of dowry, but in this film, we portray the condition of men who are also victims of the system that has made dowry a major social issue.”

He also spoke about his character, Ajesh, who has garnered praise for being inspirational. Ajesh, he revealed, is based on a real-life incident. “Ajesh was missing after the events shown in the movie, and if he ever watches the film and returns, we are offering him a gift as a token of appreciation.”

Ponman is based on GR Indu Gopan’s novel Nalanchu Cheruppakkar.
