Reports initially suggested that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, 64, was hospitalised in Kochi due to breathing issues, high fever, and muscle aches from a viral respiratory infection. It was believed his health declined after returning from Gujarat, where he finished filming L2: Empuraan and completed post-production on his directorial debut, Barroz.
However, South First has confirmed that Mohanlal was not hospitalised. He had only a consultation with a doctor, which led to confusion due to a medical certificate. Contrary to initial reports, he is recovering at home.
The hospital’s official statement advises a five-day rest and strict medication. Recent updates confirm that his condition is improving under close observation.

Barroz is now set to release on 2 October 2024, coinciding with the Navratri festival. This highly anticipated film marks Mohanlal’s directorial debut. Earlier this year, the team faced a copyright infringement accusation from a German-based Malayali writer, though the team has yet to address the allegation publicly.
Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, began filming in October last year and has completed multiple schedules.
The first look of Empuraan shows Mohanlal from behind, holding a gun as a helicopter approaches, suggesting a grand-scale, high-octane action movie.
Written by Murali Gopy, Empuraan sees Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, and Indrajith Sukumaran returning to their roles from Lucifer (2016).
The sequel also reunites cinematographer Sujith Vaassudev and composer Deepak Dev. The film is co-produced by Aashirvad Cinemas and Lyca Productions, marking the latter’s first foray into Malayalam cinema.
Barroz, produced by Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas, features cinematography by Santosh Sivan and is based on Jijo Punnoose’s book Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure. Kalavoor Ravikumar and Krishnadas Panki pen the film’s dialogues.
The cast includes Guru Somasundaram, Komal Sharma, Thuhin Menon, Maya, Cesar Lorente Raton, and Ignacio Mateos.
Barroz features music by Lydian Nadhaswaram, with the background score composed by Hollywood’s Mark Kilian, known for his work on Deep Blue Sea 3 and Pitch Perfect.
The release of the 3D fantasy drama, originally announced in 2019, has faced multiple delays. It was most recently set for 28 March 2024.
