Mohanlal and Mammootty 2023

A day ahead of the release of Barroz—the directorial debut of Mohanlal, his colleague, Mammootty took to Facebook to wish the actor-turned-director “all the best”.

In the film aiming for Christmas release, Mohanlal plays the titular role, along with heading the direction. The other cast includes Maya, Sara Vega, Tuhin Menon, Cesar Lorente Raton, Kallirroi Tziafeta, and Guru Somasundaram.

The film’s screenplay is based on Jijo Punnoose’s popular novel “Barroz: Guardian of D’Gama’s Treasure“. In the novel, Barroz protects Vasco da Gama’s hidden treasure for over four centuries. It’s his responsibility to pass on this wealth to a true descendant of Vasco da Gama.

Mammootty wrote on Facebook, “Baaroz is the first directorial venture of Mohanlal, who has been making us thrilled and amused for so long with his skilful acting.”

“I am sure that the knowledge and experience he has gained so far will be useful for this movie. Wishing success to my dear Lal. With prayers, love. Yours Mammootty,” he further wrote.

Legal troubles

Antony Perumbavoor of Aashirvad Cinemas is backing Barroz. Santosh Shivan is the cinematographer and B Ajithkumar is the editor. Lydian Nadhaswaram is composing the music. Mark Kilian is composing the background score.

In August, Barroz has landed in legal trouble. A Germany-based Malayali author, George Thundiparambil, accused the makers of copyright infringement.

In his legal notice, George Thundiparambil mentioned that there are similarities between his 2008 novel “Maya” and the screenplay of Barroz.

Incidentally, Christmas, 25 December is also the day Mohanlal made his acting debut 34 years back with Manjil Virinja Pookkal (1980), directed by Fazil.

Another milestone collaboration between Mohanlal and Fazil— Manichitrathaazhu (1993) was also released on 25 December.

On the other hand, the sequel to Lucifer (2019), Empuraan directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran is set to hit the theatres on 27 March, 2025.
