Manichitrathazhu premiere held in Chennai

A premiere of the Malayalam classic movie Manichitrathazhu was held in Chennai on Monday, 29 July. The premiere was attended by many celebrities, including the film’s leading lady Shobana, producer Swargachithra Appachan, and actor Karthi.

The Manichitrathazhu premiere was organised at the Le Magic Lantern Preview Theatre & Recording Studio owned by actor Lissi Lakshmi.

However, director Fazil, Mohanlal, and Suresh Gopi couldn’t attend the premiere. They are expected to watch the remastered 4K Dolby Atmos version soon.

Shobana won the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance as Ganga/Nagavalli in Manichitrathazhu. The film also won the National Film Award for Best Popular Film Providing Wholesome Entertainment.

The veteran actor-dancer is all excited as the classic film is getting a re-release. Indeed, this was the third time Shobana watched the movie in a theatre.

After watching the special premiere, Shobana told the media that Manichitrathazhu was one of those rare films that never got outdated. She also felt that the Malayalam audience’s immense love for the film grew only with time.

Manichitrathazhu re-release on 17 August

Meanwhile, Fazil’s Manichitrathazhu, featuring Mohanlal, Shobhana, and Suresh Gopi in the lead roles, will be re-released on 17 August, 31 years after its theatrical release.

The movie was initially difficult to restore as the print was lost. However, the makers acquired the print from the archives in Mumbai and remastered it. The movie 4K version will be distributed by Matinee Now and E4 Entertainment.

Interestingly, Mohanlal was initially sceptical about the restoration process.

Manichitrathazhu was a superhit movie upon its release and ran for more than a year in some centres.

Mohanlal appears as Dr Sunny, Suresh Gopi as Nakulan, and Shobana as Nakulan’s wife Ganga in the film.

The movie also casts Nedumdi Venu, Thilakan, Innocent, KPAC Lalitha, and Vinaya Prasad in prominent roles.

It was remade in Tamil as Chandramukhi (2005), headlined by Rajinikanth and directed by P Vasu.

Manichitrathazhu was remade in Hindi as Bhool Bhulaiyaa (2007) with Akshay Kumar and was helmed by Priyadarshan. It was remade in Kannada as Apthamithra (2004) and in Bengali as Rajmohol (2005).
