Malayalam sctress Vincy Aloshious, who had previously spoken about being mistreated by a co-actor on a film set, has publicly identified the individual as Shine Tom Chacko. The incident reportedly took place during the shooting of the film Soothravakyam.
Vincy has submitted a formal complaint to the film chamber, prompting the chamber’s monitoring committee to schedule an emergency meeting on Monday, 14 April, to address the matter.
Following Vincy’s complaint, Kochi police allegedly raided the hotel in which Shine was staying.
However, according to reports, Shine Tom Chacko allegedly fled from a hotel in the north. The incident reportedly took place around 11 pm on Wednesday, 16 April, and CCTV footage has surfaced showing him hurrying down the stairs from the third floor. According to reports, when officers arrived at room no. 314, Shine opened the door, spotted the police, and quickly escaped through the window.
Apart from the police investigation, the Excise Department also may question Vincy, especially since Shine’s name had come up earlier in a hybrid drug case in Alappuzha, allegations he had denied.
Meanwhile, AMMA has set up a three member panel to probe Vincy Aloshious formal complaint against Shine Tom Chacko. The committee, comprising Ansiba hassan, Vinu mohan, and Sarayu Mohan, will investigate allegations of drug use and inappropriate behaviour during the filming of Soothravakyam.
Speaking to South First, Sarayu said the next steps would be decided after receiving Shine’s explanation. She also added that the probe would be fast-tracked due to the seriousness of the charges.
Vincy had earlier posted a video on Instagram describing disturbing on-set behaviour by Shine, including spitting a white powder suspected to be drugs and attempting to fix her costume without consent.
After the video went viral, industry bodies including AMMA, FEFKA, and the Film chamber encouraged her to lodge a complaint. The WCC backed her, calling for an inquiry into whether the production had a functional ICC as required.
Kerala Excise Minister MB Rajesh has assured that the government will consider a possible investigation. Speaking to the media, the minister emphasised that the Excise Department takes such information seriously and that appropriate action will be taken if a formal complaint is received.
“The department treats every such piece of information with utmost seriousness. If a complaint is filed, we will certainly investigate the matter,” Rajesh said.
Referring to a past case involving Shine Tom Chacko, the minister pointed out that the judiciary had criticised the police for their handling of the case, which eventually resulted in an acquittal.
However, he clarified that the incident occurred during the previous United Democratic Front (UDF) regime and not under the current Left Democratic Front (LDF) government.
“The court had strongly criticised the police’s negligence in that particular case. But it is important to note that the incident took place when the UDF was in power. The LDF government bears no responsibility for that failure. The matter has already been clarified in the Assembly,” he stated.
Rajesh further added that the identity of the complainant is secondary in such matters. “What matters are the content of the complaints and the credibility of the information provided. The government will take strong action accordingly,” he said.
The controversy started after the actor recently said that she would not act in films with drug using actors. She made the statement at an anti-drug awareness event.
Her statement received backlash, prompting her to clarify further. In the said Instagram video, Vincy claimed, “Some days back at an anti-drug campaign programme, I made a statement that I will not do movies again with people I know who use drugs. I am doing this video because I wanted to make my stand clear,” she said.
“When I had a problem with my dress, I went to correct it. He said, ‘I will also come and correct it for you.’ He said this in front of everyone. It was very difficult to go ahead with the shoot,” she recounted, without naming the actor.
Further speaking on the alleged drug use, Vincy added, “When we were practising a scene, he was spitting some kind of white powder onto the table. It was very evident that he was using drug on the film set.”
Shine Tom Chacko forayed into acting with director Kamal’s 2011 survival drama Khaddama and made his Tamil debut with Beast (2022). The Malayalam actor’s Telugu debut was Nani’s Dasara (2023).
