Maharaja’s success streak continues; makes history as this year’s top-grossing Tamil film in the US

Initially released in 100 theatres in Kerala, the film, expanded to over 175 theatres in its second week due to popular demand.

Vijay Sethupathi is enjoying the success of his 50th film, Maharaja, directed by Nithilan Saminathan of Kurangu Bommai (2017)-fame. Since its release on 14 June, the film has not only received critical acclaim but has also set new box-office records in India and internationally.

According to recent updates from the makers, Maharaja has grossed 1 million Malaysian Ringgits in Malaysia and $1 million in the UAE. It has also emerged as the top-grossing film in the US.

The film features Anurag Kashyap, Sachana Namidass, Mamta Mohandas, and Natty in key roles, alongside Abhirami, Aruldoss, Munishkanth, Manikandan, Singam Puli, Bharathiraja and Vinod Sagar.

On 22 June, Maharaja recorded a Tamil occupancy rate of 35.48%, generating a net income of ₹5.4 crore. Regarding its global performance, the Tamil film has garnered ₹18 crore in gross earnings from overseas markets and ₹48.2 crore in India. Combined, these figures amount to a total gross of ₹66.2 crore, according to Sacnilk.

Vijay Sethupathi extended sincere thanks to the Kerala audience for their immense support in making Maharaja, a resounding success. He was present in the city to attend its success celebration at Lulu Mall, Thiruvananthapuram.

The film has garnered exceptional audience response with sold-out shows across Kerala. Initially released in 100 theatres, it expanded to over 175 theatres in its second week due to popular demand.

While in Kerala, director Nithilan Saminathan remarked, “I’ve been told by many that the structure of this film bears similarities to Malayalam cinema. The movie has been warmly embraced by audiences throughout Kerala, possibly because I draw inspiration from watching numerous Malayalam films.”
