Director Balaji Kumar, best known for his critically acclaimed film Vidiyum Munn (2013), says that his upcoming film Kolai has an international appeal. The movie features Vijay Antony in the lead.

Kolai is a film that I have made with a lot of love. I wanted to make a film with international appeal. So, I chose to make it in a classy fashion,” the director told South First.

Balaji Kumar pointed out, “When Indian films are watched elsewhere in the world, the audiences there get the impression that Indian cinema dwells on poverty a lot. Not many know that India has another rich side to it. We have a really rich cultural heritage. So, I wanted Kolai to have an international appeal.”

Well, this only means that the makers are not going to confine the movie to just Tamil audiences in India, but would take it on an international scale. If that is the case, what other new markets in the world are the makers of Kolai looking to enter?

Balaji Kumar says, “When we began Kolai four years ago, we intended to have subtitles in French and Spanish. The cast for this investigative murder mystery was chosen accordingly.”

He further adds, “For instance, we knew that Vijay Antony could easily pass off for a Mexican and Meenakshi Chaudhary, one of the female leads, has a French look. Since Ritika Singh has a Spanish look, we thought she could gain acceptance there.”

Vijay Antony sports a salt-and-pepper look in the film. He plays a detective named Vinayak.

The salt-and-pepper look, the director says, was to sub-consciously go along with his profile that claims that he solved over 200 cases.

Ritika Singh plays Sandhya, Vinayak’s assistant, and Meenakshi Chaudhary does the role of Leila who gets murdered.

John Vijay appears as a cop named Mansoor Ali Khan and Siddhartha Shankar as Sathish, Leila’s boyfriend.

The investigative thriller also features Murali Sharma as an agent named Aditya and Radhika as Rekha, the boss.

Director Balaji Kumar notes that the audience needs to pay additional attention to Kolai.  “Well, there are sequences that are quite intricate. For instance, there is a flashback within a flashback within a flashback.”

To understand this, audiences need to remain focused. “But I can assure you that this will be a totally enjoyable experience,” the filmmaker signs off, with a confident smile.
