'Kesariya' from 'Brahmastra' crosses 500 million streams on Spotify

Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt’s hit song “Kesariya” from the 2022 film Brahmastra has created a record by crossing 500 million streams on Spotify.

With this, “Kesariya” also became the first Indian song to create such a record.

With Arijit Singh’s vocals, the soundtrack became a chartbuster because of the catchy tune composed by Pritam. Amitabh Bhattacharya penned the lyrics.

However, when initially released, “Kesariya” became a point of discussion for the use of the Hinglish word “Storiyaan“.

While many felt the word seemed odd in the otherwise soulful song, the catchy tune of “Kesariya” quickly made its way into many playlists.

Sharing the news about the record created by “Kesariya” on Spotify, Sony Music India — the music label for the film, wrote on X: “Your love has made Kesariya become the first ever Indian song to hit 500 million streams on Spotify.”

Meanwhile, the “Kesariya” video song boasts 113 million views on its official YouTube channel.

The soundtrack was picturised on the lead pair — Ranbir Kapoor and Alia Bhatt, on the banks of the River Ganga.

Brahmastra-Part One: Shiva is directed by Ayan Mukherjee and stars Amitabh Bachchan, Mouni Roy, and Nagarjuna Akkineni alongside the lead pair.

The Bollywood film is part of the Brahmastra universe dubbed as “Astraverse”. A science fiction, the flick has its basis in the Hindu mythology.

In the movie, Ranbir Kapoor played the role of a DJ named Shiva, who learns of his affinity towards fire, and ability to invoke the mass destruction weapon “Brahmastra”.

The movie then follows the journey of Shiva with his partner Isha on the journey to safeguard the said “Brahmastra”.

The other two parts of the film are expected to release in 2026 and 2027.
