Keerthy Suresh is all set to essay the role of the late MS Subbulakshmi in an upcoming biopic on the legendary Carnatic singer.

As per producer JSK Satishkumar of JSK Film Corporation, the film will be directed by Suresh Chakravarthy.

Kannada film producer Rockline Venkatesh, who has churned out several remakes, including Rajinikanth-starrer Lingaa (2014), was to do a biopic on MS Subbulakshmi. However, the flick did not take off.

Cinematographer-director Rajiv Menon — of Kandukondain Kandukondain (2000) fame — also announced that he would do a biopic on the late singer with Vidya Balan in the lead.

Menon is said to have initially offered the role to Aishwarya Rai Bachchan. But then, for reasons unknown, he approached Vidya Balan who did biopics on actor Silk Smitha and mathematician Shakuntala Devi.

The biopic was the brainchild of noted Malayalam director Shyamaprasad. He asked MEnon to work on it. The project was eventually shelved owing to their creative differences.

Meanwhile, V Raj Gopal shot a 113-minute documentary on Subbulakshmi, showcasing her journey as a Carnatic singer.

In dire need of a break!

Keerthy Suresh celebrated her 30th birthday on Monday, 17 October.

She bagged the National Award for best actress for Telugu-Tamil bilingual Mahanati (2018), in which she played the role of yesteryear actress Savitri Ganesan.

However, her stature as a successful actress in commercial mainstream cinema has not exactly been cemented.

The actor recently teamed up with stars like Vijay (Sarkar in 2018) and Mahesh Babu (Sarkaru Vaari Paata in 2022).

She played a sister’s role in Rajinikanth’s Annaatthe (2021), but she did not make any headway.

Her heroine-centric films like Good Luck Sakhi and Saani Kayidham streamed on OTT during the Covid-19 pandemic, but were disasters.

The forthcoming Telugu film Dasara with Nani is her only hope for a fresh break now.

Meanwhile, there are reports that Keerthy might play the lead in Silambarasan-Sudha Kongara’s upcoming project. Hombale Films of KGF and Kantara fame is bankrolling it.
