Interview: You can go places with right content, says Nikhil

The Hindi version of Karthikeya 2 was screened in over 1,500 theatres, up from the initial 53, in just five days of its release, following which Nikhil became a household name in north India.

It’s no secret that many youngsters dream of attaining stardom, but only a few make it. Nikhil is one of those actors in Tollywood who went through a lot of ups and downs but managed to make a name for himself without a godfather.

‘Was confident about a hit’

When asked whether the success of Karthikeya 2 boosted his confidence levels, he said, “Very much. My confidence in the choice of scripts has increased. I strongly believe that with the right content, you can go places. I believe more in my gut now.”

“We were pretty confident that Karthikeya 2 will be a hit. On a personal note, I am happy with the outcome and content with where I am today. I always believed that hard work pays and it did,” he told South First.

Though Karthikeya 2 is being streamed on Zee5, it is still running successfully in the theatres. To this, Nikhil responded: “The film crossed all the boundaries and proved that people will definitely visit the theatres if you offer them a perfect entertainer. We are still counting the collections and this is a dream-come-true moment.”

The actor revealed that he and director Chandoo were confident about the movie’s success and hence requested the producers to release it in other languages too.

“The producer had to put in more money and take double the risk to release the movie in other languages. But we didn’t expect such a tremendous response from the audiences and rave reviews from the media. People who couldn’t visit the theatres are now watching it on OTT. There are repeat audiences too,” he said, with a glint in his eyes.

‘Anupam Kher is inimitable’

Nikhil believed that no one else could have essayed the cameo better than Anupam Kher. He is inimitable. Given the bond that producer Abhishek Agarwal shares with Anupam Kher, it became easy to have the versatile actor on board.

“Anupam sir immediately said ‘yes’ to the role when Chandoo narrated the storyline. He (Kher) even organised a press show in Mumbai and the response was overwhelming. I thank all of them for being so supportive,” Nikhil quipped.

When inquired about the kind of films he would be doing in the future, pat came the reply: “Karthikeya 2’s success only increased my responsibility. I want to tell stories that no one knows; stories that will drive crowds to the theatres. I have a couple of projects in the pipeline. Both of them are action-oriented films which have the potential to become pan-India projects.”

Nikhil’s upcoming flick Spy, an action thriller, is also a pan-India movie. It deals with one of the hidden secrets of India and Nikhil will be seen playing a spy. Almost 50 percent of the flick has been shot and the remaining will go on floors soon.
