Max stars Kichcha Sudeep in the titular role. Suspended inspector Arjun Mahaakshay aka Max is slated to resume work with a new posting.
The night prior to him resuming duty, en route to his house, he witnesses a crime against some of his colleagues by sons of two ministers.
What ensues is a series of events that leads to an eventful night for all of them.
Sudeep in all his interviews has maintained that Max is a film that he took on for the sake of his fans who want to see him in a mass avatar.
True to his words, this is a tailor-made vehicle that showcases him as a sleek and stylish cop who indulges in some whistle-worthy dialogue delivery and breathtaking stunt sequences. This is a perfect package for his fans.
Unlike most action films that go with big backstories and flashback sequences, this film is a pretty much linear tale of a story unfolding over one night with minimal frills.
This is a story of how one unforgiving, authoritative police inspector decides to protect his team after they discover two dead bodies in their station and how he goes to any length to save them from adversities.
While the story is that of a typical mass masala entertainer sans the romantic track, where a hero stands taller than all his opponents and takes them all while protecting his ilk, the treatment is commendable and the reason why this film stands out.
The cinematography, production design, cool background score and fast-paced narrative work are to the film’s advantage.
The film also sees some staples in the form of a dance number, loud and brash villains and heroes turning saviours to protect the modesty of women, even when the woman is a cop.
Some of these could have been done away with, given how the film tried to be unconventional in dealing with an otherwise conventional storyline.
Apart from those cliches, there are a few other shortcomings that one might notice. One of those is how there is a tad bit of overacting by the rest of the cops in the station, while Sudeep is seen in a measured tone. This can get on one’s nerves after a point while watching the film.
Some good actors have been cast as villains in the film, but none of them stand tall against the protagonist. Though, the twists in the plot make up for this fact.
When it comes to performances, the film is an out-and-out Sudeep show, with him dancing, fighting, doling out punching dialogues and charming fans with his winsome smile.
He is in top form and this role is testimony to why he is one of the fittest and most stylish heroes in the Kannada film industry.
When it comes to the rest of the ensemble cast, they all deliver what is required, given the limited scope the film’s story gives them. But, one cannot complain as this is a tailor-made Kichcha vehicle for the fans and the driving seat is meant for him and no one else.
Max is that typical commercial entertainer that fans want, where they see their superstar in all the glory with dialogues and action sequences galore. And this Christmas, Santa Claus has delivered exactly that to Kichcha fans.
