Kannada watchlist July 2024

As of June 30, 125 Kannada films have been released in theatres, but only a handful have attracted attention and generated business. Industry insiders attribute Sandalwood’s slump partly to the lack of A-list hero releases. There aren’t many big-ticket releases to look forward to, for the rest of the year.

With half of 2024 over, the Kannada film industry is eager for a major hit. Sandalwood will see a wave of action entertainers this July. From Bisi Bisi Ice Cream to Mafia, several anticipated films are hitting the screens this month.

Bisi Bisi Ice Cream

Announced in January, this one is set to release in theatres, on 5 July. Arvind Sastry, known for Kahi (2016) and Alidu Ulidavaru (2019), is directing the crime comedy romance, Bisi Bisi Ice Cream. The film features Aravind Iyer as a cab driver, Siri Ravikumar as the female lead, and Gopalkrishna Deshpande, in a significant role.

The story centres on a mysterious woman who enters the life of a depressed, heartbroken, and ailing cab driver, becoming both a remedy for his troubles and the beginning of many adventures. The film’s shooting has concluded, and post-production has begun.

Arvind Sastry directs, writes, and edits the film. It is presented by Boiled Beans and produced by Akshara Bharadwaj, who also handles costume design. The music is composed by Nakul Abhyankar, with cinematography by Enosh Olivera. Shreyank Nanjappa is in charge of sound mixing, and Suresh Bagali handles sound recording.

Mafia

Actor Prajwal Devaraj teams up with director Lohith H for the gritty cop thriller, Mafia. As the title suggests, the film is a crime drama with elements of action and suspense.

Prajwal appears in an enticing avatar as a police officer and promotional materials promise a solid commercial entertainer. Aditi Prabhudeva stars as the female lead, with former Bigg Boss Kannada winner Shine Shetty also playing a cop. J Anoop Seelin composed the music.

Produced by Bangalore Kumar Films, Mafia, originally slated for a January 2024 release, is now set to hit theatres on 26 July.

Vidyarthi Vidyarthiniyare

Rap singer and music composer Chandan Shetty makes his acting debut in Vidyarthi Vidyathiniyare, set to release in July. The recently unveiled trailer showcases a vibrant college campus backdrop, hinting at a teenage student drama, directed by Arun Amukta.

While the trailer offers glimpses into the lives of teenagers and an entertaining group of students, Chandan Shetty’s role remains undisclosed. According to the director’s comments during the trailer launch, the singer-turned-actor will portray a different character in this youthful entertainer.

Produced by Subramanya Kudde and AC Shivalingegowda, under the Variety Creations banner, the film features mostly new faces including Amar, Bhavana, Manasi, Bhavya, and Vivaan, alongside seasoned actors Raghu Ramanakoppa and Sudhi in significant roles. Vijeth Krishna handles the music, while Kumar Gowda and Arun Suresh manage the cinematography duties.

Hejjaru

The film, directed by debutant Harshapriya, blends various experimental elements. Starring Bhagat Alva and Leonilla Shweta D’Souza in the lead roles, the film explores the concept of ‘parallel life,’ where similar incidents unfold in the lives of two different individuals, across different timelines.

According to the director, Hejjaru revolves around two characters. Produced by Ramji Talkies and Gagan Enterprises, the film features music by Poornachandra Tejaswi and cinematography by Amar Chayagrahana. Alongside the main cast, the movie includes Gopal Deshpande, Naveen Krishna, Muni, and Arun Balaraj.
