Actor Shabana Azmi to receive Kodagappa Lifetime Achievement Award from Karnataka government

Prominent actor Shabana Azmi has been selected as the recipient of the Kodagappa Lifetime Achievement Award at the 16th Bangalore International Film Festival.

Announcing the same on International Women’s Day, 8 March, Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah announcing the award, noted Shabana Azmi’s contribution to Indian cinema.

He wrote on X: “Congratulations to the great actress and multilingual artist of Indian cinema, Ms Shabana Azmi, who has been selected for the Kodagappa Lifetime Achievement Award as part of the 16th International Film Festival organized in Bengaluru.”

Speaking of her achievements, Siddaramaiah wrote, “Shabana, who made her debut in Sandalwood with the film Kanneshwara Rama in the 70s and won the hearts of Kannada film lovers, has acted in South Indian films as well as Hindi films and has become a household name. This honour, which comes after nearly 50 years of her service to the arts, has added to the prestige of the award.”

She holds a record of five National Film Awards for Best Actress. In recognition of her contributions, the Government of India awarded her the Padma Shri in 1998 and the Padma Bhushan in 2012.

Shabana Azmi was born in Hyderabad, to poet Kaifi Azmi and stage actress Shaukat Azmi. She made her film debut in 1974 with Ankur — directed by the legendary Shyam Benegal. Shabana soon became one of the leading actresses of parallel cinema.

Shyam Benegal’s Mandi (1983), Deepa Mehta’s Fire (1996), Mrinal Sen’s Khandhar (1984), and Vishal Baradhwaj’s Makdee (2003) are some of her prominent works.

In recent times, Shabana played key roles in Rocky Aur Raani Kii Prem Kahaani (2023), and the Netflix series Dabba Cartel. 

The 16th Bangalore International Film Festival, which started on 1 March, is set to conclude on Saturday, 8 March.
