Despite complaints about increased ticket prices, the highly anticipated dystopian sci-fi epic, Kalki 2898 AD, has made a strong start with its bookings. According to Sacnilk, the film has earned ₹6.08 crore from bookings, with over 2,00,000 tickets sold in India.

The film, further, has already sold more than 1,13,000 tickets and generated $3 million in revenue from the North American market.

The highest number of tickets, we hear, were sold for the Telugu version, with approximately 1,95,000 tickets across 2D, 3D, and IMAX 3D formats. The Hindi version had the second-highest sales, with over 7,000 tickets sold. The Tamil version sold over 2,000 tickets.

Ahead of its release, the Telangana government approved extra shows and higher ticket prices for the opening week. Initially, news of a 5.30 am show on release day in Telangana thrilled fans, but the increased ticket prices for the first eight days (₹70 for single screens and ₹100 for multiplexes) caused some disappointment.

Trade analyst Taran Adarsh posted on X about the impressive bookings, highlighting that even 4.30 am shows in Hyderabad reached full occupancy.

Theme of Kalki out

The makers recently released the much-anticipated second single, titled “Theme of Kalki”. The song was unveiled at an event, held in Mathura, the birthplace of Lord Krishna, on 23 June. Versatile actor Shobana, who plays a crucial role in the film, performed at the event with her team of dancers. A teaser video of the same has also been shared on social media.

As part of their promotional activities, team Kalki 2898 AD shared a video featuring the stars and producers discussing the film’s making and other details. The YouTube video, titled Kalki Chronicles, features snippets of the cast’s banter along with behind-the-scenes insights about the film.

The video showcases the main cast–Prabhas, Kamal Haasan, Amitabh Bachchan, and Deepika Padukone–discussing with producers, Swapna Dutt and Priyanka Dutt.

‘Nag Ashwin has a childlike enthusiasm’

In a particular segment, Deepika Padukone was all praise for Nag Ashwin’s childlike enthusiasm.

“I was in Mumbai during a long break between shooting schedules. It had been a while since I heard from him. Then I noticed a missed call from Nagi, and I was curious about what had happened,” Deepika reminisced.

She later mentioned that Nag Ashwin had called her to share the news of Kamal Haasan joining the cast.

“I called just to inform you that we completed our first day of shooting with Kamal sir,” Nag Ashwin told Deepika, as she recalled. The Bollywood actor highlighted the director’s infectious enthusiasm, likening it to that of a child.

Kamal Haasan then interrupted, emphasising that the childlike enthusiasm was crucial for a film like Kalki 2898 AD to come to fruition. “That’s what defined this film. That spirit,” he remarked.

The seasoned actor then playfully gestured towards Deepika’s baby bump and quipped, “We hope this little one will also direct a film someday.” The jest sparked laughter among Deepika, Prabhas, and even the makers.

Kalki 2898 AD, is set to release on 27 June.
