January watchlist: Darshan to kickstart 2023 in Sandalwood

The month of January is going to be a one-man show by the Challenging Star as no other star hero movies are releasing in theatres.

A slew of movies is gearing up for a grand release on big screens in Sandalwood this month. The first week of January is all set to witness at least seven releases. However, Challenging Star Darshan is likely to put up a one-man show in theatres.

Thugs of Ramaghada

Thugs of Ramaghada is a crime thriller based on true incidents from the 90s. Directed by debutant Karthik, the movie roused expectations with its making and songs, released so far.

Chandan Raj, Ashwin Haasan, and Mahalakshmi will be seen in the lead roles alongside theatre artists including Prabhu Hosadurga, Tiger Ganga, Jagadish, and Suryakiran in prominent roles. It’s releasing on 6 January.

Mr Bachelor

After the below-average performance of his previous venture Dil Pasand, Darling Krishna is back with another rom-com.

Mr Bachelor features Darling Krishna alongside Nimika Ratnakar with his real-life partner Milana Nagaraj in a special cameo.

Directed by Naidu Bandar, the film is scheduled for release on 6 January.

Spooky College

From the makers of the hit film, Rangitaranga comes a horror venture starring Dia-fame Kushi Ravi.

Directed by Bharat, Spooky College revolves around a decades-old college building near Dandeli. Vivek Sinha plays the male lead.

The latest sensation in sandalwood, Reeshma Nanaiah will be seen in the remix of the classic number “Mellusire Savigana” from the 1960s film Eerakesari. The film is scheduled for release on 6 January.

Miss Nandini

Another flick that is releasing on 6 January is Miss Nandini, featuring Priyanka Upendra in the lead.

Directed by Gurudatta SR, the film focuses on the plight of government schools. Bhavya, Danny Kuttappa, and Raghu Pandeshwar will appear in the supporting roles.

Shri Balaji Photo Studio

Actor Rajesh Dhruva, known for his work in Agnisakshi Kannada tele serial, is making his big screen debut in Shri Balaji Photo Studio (Since 1979).

The actor is also debuting as a director with this venture. The film focuses on the traditional photo studios from the 70s. The flick is up for release on 6 January.

Orchestra, Mysuru

Directed by Sunil Mysore, Orchestra Mysuru is set for release on 12 January.

Produced by Raghu Dixit Productions and Ashwin Vijay Kumar, actor Dali Dhananjay penned all the songs for the film.

The film is being released through Dolly Pictures, and Karthik Gowda and Yogi G Raj’s KRG Studios. It has the popular orchestra culture from the past with the city of Mysuru as its focus.

Mahesh Kumar, Rajalakshmi, Ravi Hunsur, Satchu, Rajesh Basavanna, Lingaraju, and Mahadev Prasad are playing the main roles.

Manku Bhai Foxy Rani

Winner of the Kannada Bigg Boss reality show, Roopesh Shetty features as the lead actor in Manku Bhai Foxy Rani. Directed by Gagan, the film is scheduled for release on 13 January.

Ranchi

A crime thriller directed by Shashikanth Gatti, Ranchi has Prabhu Mundkur and Divya Uruduga in the lead roles. It is hitting the theatres on 13 January.

Kranti

Darshan Thoogudeepa, known amongst his diehard fans as Challenging Star, returns with another commercial venture wrapped with a social message.

According to the makers, his film Kranti (meaning revolution) talks about the educational system, especially how commercialised it has become rather than being a knowledge hub.

Directed by composer-turned-director V Harikrishna, the film is scheduled for release on 26 January. It features Rachitha in Ram as the female lead. Crazy Star V Ravichandran also plays a cameo.

The Media House Studio banner, which produced Yajamana, is producing this project.

Following the unofficial ban on Darshan, by the mainstream media for his alleged remarks, it is the fans and social media influencers who are rigorously promoting the film.

The recent episode of a slipper being hurled at the actor in Hosapete during a song release from the film created a storm, resulting in a heated exchange of words on social media.
