All time record of box office

The multiplexes and cinema halls in India witnessed a record number of footfalls this weekend (11-13 August), all thanks to Gadar 2, Jailer, OMG 2, and Bhola Shankar.

The combined gross box office collection from these films was over ₹390 crore!

While Gadar 2, OMG 2, and Jailer earned good reviews, Bhola Shankar didn’t impress the critics and general audience.

All-time record

A joint statement from the Multiplex Association of India (MAI) and Producers Guild of India (PGI) said that this weekend set a “new all-time theatrical gross box office record” in its 100 years of history.

“The weekend drew over 2.10 crore moviegoers to theatres across the county, which is the highest combined admissions record in the last 10 years of history,” it said.

After the Covid-19 pandemic, the weekend of 11-13 August was the busiest single weekend post-reopening of the cinema industry.

“The turnout at theatres has infused a new energy in our industry, audiences are responding in numbers. We have not seen for a very long time, even the early morning shows are getting sold out,” PGI President Shibasish Sarkar said.

He added, “This weekend has been a wonderful experience for people who love mainstream cinema.”

According to MAI President Kamal Gianchandani, it was a “historic weekend” for Indian cinema and cinema lovers. “This weekend is also an undeniable demonstration of cinema being the ultimate place to be part of a shared experience,” he remarked.

Gianchandani also stated that he expects this momentum to continue for the rest of the year.

MAI is a body that represents more than 11 cinema chains, operating over 500 multiplexes and 2,500 screens in India. This comes to around 75 percent of the multiplex industry in India.

PGI is an association of film, television and digital content producers in India.

Superstar Rajinikanth’s Jailer has been storming the box office since its release. On its fifth day, the movie earned ₹350 crore worldwide.

According to trade experts, Jailer has already earned an amount of ₹176.70 crore in India and an additional ₹131.30 crore worldwide.

In Tamil Nadu, the film didn’t have early morning shows due to the State government regulations. But in Kerala and Karnataka, it witnessed early morning shows.

When asked about the response evoked by Jailer, a theatre owner in Kerala said, “It’s tremendous!”

“We are having multiple shows at our theatre complex. I feel that the movie will have more collections than that of RRR (Telugu) and KGF 2 (Kannada),” he added.

The commercial movies that get good responses in cinema halls are helpful for the exhibition industry which otherwise underwent financial distress due to Covid-19 lockdowns.

Due to the pandemic safety precautions, the operations of theatres were restricted for over a year. South Indian film industry is shining at the Indian box office after the Covid pandemic as most of the Bollywood films didn’t do well in theatres.

Films like RRR (2022), KGF 2 (2022), Vikram (2022), Pushpa: The Rise (2021), and Kantara (2022) turned out to be superhits.
