"We're not politicians nor are we media personnel. We're filmmakers. We are here to make films," producer Suresh Babu said.
Prominent Telugu film producer Suresh Babu has observed that Tollywood should never make statements on political developments. He attributed his remark to the arrest of the Leader of the Opposition in the Andhra Pradesh Assembly N Chandrababu Naidu for his alleged role in the skill development scam.
“As an industry, we always stayed non-political and non-religious. That has been the stand of the majority of the members in the film industry from the time we were in Chennai till the time we have come here,” the producer pointed out.
He was replying to the query posed by a scribe during a press meet in Hyderabad on Tuesday, 19 September. The event was held ahead of the release of Sapta Sagaralu Dhaati, the Telugu version of the Kannada blockbuster Sapta Sagaradaache Ello (2023).
Suresh Babu noted that people might have allegiances to a certain political party, but that doesn’t cause any harm.
“It is a sensitive issue. I might like a leader and might not like a specific leader. It is my own right. Even during the separation of Telangana State from united Andhra Pradesh, the Telugu film industry never made a political statement. It is better for the industry to stay non-political,” he added.
Suresh Babu also noted that it is better for the Tollywood film industry to stay apolitical. “Because there is a story behind every story. We’re not politicians nor are we media personnel. We’re filmmakers, we are here to make films.”
He hastened to add, “Lot many asked to make a statement on the present development. If I make one, then I have to give a statement every day to everything that happens in the country.”
Senior producers like Ashwini Dutt along with KS Rama Rao made statements soon after the dramatic developments taking place in Andhra Pradesh politics.
Nandamuri Balakrishna, who is in active politics while dabbling with back-to-back films, too reacted. However, neither Jr NTR nor Kalyan Ram from the Nandamuri family responded to Chandrababu Naidu’s arrest.
