We saw Naveen Chandra last in a brief yet impactful role as Varalaxmi Saratkumar’s husband in Veera Simha Reddy. He took up that guest appearance because it was a big-ticket film. But the actor has his hands full with interesting lead roles.

Right now, three of Naveen Chandra’s films are ready for release and another four are on the sets.

On the personal front, he couldn’t be happier; he recently released a photo shoot of his pregnant wife Orma. The couple welcomed a baby boy on 22 February.

In a chat with South First, Naveen Chandra says he has been travelling a lot since August last year and it feels great to be home (Hyderabad), especially to welcome his baby boy.

“Yeah, I am excited. There is so much going on for me now. All this is the result of a long wait and the belief I had in myself. Finally, people throughout the South are recognising my potential,” he said excitedly.

One of the films, which is releasing soon, is a bi-lingual and is yet to be titled. It also casts Prakash Raj, Vani Bhojan, and Karthik Ratnam in key roles. It is directed by debutant Vaali Mohan Das.

“Then there is Month of Madhu, directed by Srikanth Nagothi, which is being made in sync sound. The post-production work is underway. Grading is being done in Mumbai. My previous project with Srikanth Nagothi, Bhanumati & Ramakrishna, was also shot in sync sound,” Naveen Chandra explained.

This apart, the actor is busy with a flick produced by UV Creations and directed by a 21-year-old debutant Rakesh Varma. Also, there is Jigarthanda 2 with SJ Suryah and Raghava Lawrence.

From cameos to lead roles

Naveen Chandra debuted with Hanu Raghavapudi’s (directorial debut) Andala Rakshasi in 2012. Since then, he came a long way. From playing parallel leads to cameo roles, the actor did good movies that had significant and also inconsequential characters.

But, after so many years, it is now that the audience is sitting up and taking notice of his work. The pandemic came as a blessing in disguise for him to showcase his talent and his followers grew considerably.

Naveen Chandra is now getting offers from filmmakers across the States.

A native of Bellary in Karnataka, the actor says he didn’t know anyone when he stepped into the industry. But all he did was make use of the opportunities that came his way and do better with every movie.

He concurs he did some films for survival and visibility though he knew he would be typecast. “I am being selective now. I have done a variety of films in many languages this year. It’s been a crazy year for me,” he was all smiles.

His forthcoming films

Inspector Rishi (Tamil-Telugu bilingual) is helmed by female director JS Nandini (Amazon Originals). She has an all-woman 12-member team who do just about everything on the sets.

“They are amazing and wield all the power and skills to ensure a smooth job. Of 99 days of schedule, I was there for 69 days. I am also shooting for Sought, a crime adventure revolving around kids. It’s for Amazon.”

While Ammu (2022) won him laurels for his performance as a cop who abuses his wife (Aishwarya Lekshmi), his upcoming Tamil film has Naveen playing a victim. Next, there is Season 3 of the Parampara series which will go on the floors soon.

“I also did a festival film based on the Sri Lankan issue. We used multiple languages in the flick. It is a beautiful script.”

“A wedding takes place in a house during the Sri Lankan war when the guests are taken hostage by a group of military officers. An Indian Army Captain from the Rajput Regiment rescues them without using a bullet,” Naveen Chandra elucidated the storyline.

While there are more interesting scripts on the table, Naveen Chandra wants at least a few to release before taking up fresh commitments.
