You might mistake him for a newbie because of his fresh looks, but character artiste Satyam Rajesh is as old as any average veteran existing in Telugu cinema.
Having started his career with Joruga Husharuga way back in 2002, the actor came to prominence with the 2003 romantic drama Satyam from which he earned the moniker “Satyam” to his actual name Rajesh Babu.
As his upcoming movie Maa Oori Polimera 2 is slated to hit the screens on Friday, 3 November, the actor spoke to the media on Thursday, 2 November.
Here are the excerpts from his interview:
The actor says he came to the industry to become an antagonist but ended up playing character roles, especially as a comedian.
Recollecting his career path, Satyam Rajesh said, “Initially, I made up my mind to become a villain. But then, I accepted the offers of supporting characters during the initial days of my career. Comedy happened to me naturally. It worked out well and I continued doing it.”
The actor says comedy became his bread and butter. “I kept doing homework on every character that I portrayed on the screen. The urge to bring freshness to the role that I do has brought me where I am now.”
Satyam Rajesh hasn’t stopped searching for better roles other than the role of sidekick.
“I had the dream of playing a villain in the films for a long time. That’s how I happened to be the antagonist in Aryan Rajesh’s 2005 action drama Nireekshana. But that didn’t do well. Now, I bring something similar to you in Maa Oori Polimera 2,” he oozed confidence.
Maa Oori Polimera 2 is a sequel to the OTT release Maa Oori Polimera (2021). It is written and directed by Anil Vishwanath.
Starring Baladitya, Kamakshi Bhaskarla, and Satyam Rajesh in the lead roles, the film is produced by Gowr Kriesna under the banner of Sri Krishna Creations.
Satyam Rajesh believes that the Maa Oori Polimera 2 has earned its own fanbase because of the prequel.
“Though many other films are releasing on the same date (3 November), Maa Oori Polimera enjoys a cult following. In the prequel, we could show only what we had with limited resources. We didn’t take much time for that. It was wrapped in 20 days,” he recalled.
The actor said they were abundantly offered time and funds in the case of the sequel.
“The producer wanted everything to be perfect. We had five schedules of shoot — one in Gandikota of Kadapa district. Later, we went to Paderu a couple of times. Two schedules were held in Kerala and then we shot for two days near the Padmanabhawwamy Temple.”
When asked why the film gathered so much attention, Satyam Rajesh replied, “It is because of the short sequence that we showed to audiences in the first part itself. I had a doubt initially that they would delete it in editing but that was crucial in making audiences wait for the sequel.”
This sequel has new characters; While Palasa 1978 (2020) director Karuna Kumar appears as Akshitha, producer Gowr Kriesna plays a key role.
The actor says he would go to any extent for the love he has for cinema.
When asked about his nude scenes in the film, Satyam Rajesh quipped: “If the script demands it, one has to submit himself to the character. That’s how an actor stimulates audiences through his character. Acting nude was a voluntary call. It’s a rare opportunity not everyone gets to do on the screen.”
He noted that filmmaker Anil tried to bring originality to every frame. “We shot in the forest. It did frighten me—the witchcraft scenes, especially in the graveyard at night.”
He signed off by saying, “None of the people I know have practised black magic. So, I couldn’t take any real-life references when it comes to playing the role. There are many tear-jerking scenes. It will certainly impress audiences.”
