Aamir Khan’s upcoming release Laal Singh Chaddha features Telugu actor Naga Chaitanya as a character named ‘Balaraju’ from Bodipalem. The role is of about 30 minutes duration and marks his Bollywood debut.

A directorial venture of Advait Chandan, it is being presented in Telugu by actor Chiranjeevi.

Aamir Khan, Kiran Rao, Jyoti Deshpande, Ajit Andhare and Radhika Chaudhari are producing it under Aamir Khan Productions and Viacom18 Studios.

While the Hindi trailer was released recently, Laal Singh Chaddha’s Telugu trailer was launched in Hyderabad by Chiranjeevi on Sunday, 24 July.

The film also has Kareena Kapoor, Mona Singh and Aarya Sharma in key roles.

An official remake of Tom Hanks’s classic hit Forrest Gump, the script (adaptation) was written by Atul Kulkarni 14 years ago. It took a lot of time for the makers to get the rights.

An adaptation of Forrest Gump

Aamir Khan told the media that he didn’t hear Atul’s script for two years. “However, I fell in love with the adaptation after hearing it. Not once did Advait and I watch Forrest Gump after deciding to bring out the remake and getting the rights.”

“Though I’m a big fan of Tom Hanks myself, I wasn’t comparing myself with him. I felt I was ‘Laal’ and not Grump because of the adaptations.

“Once or twice, we did see Forrest Gump, to check how the original makers shot a scene. Sometimes, it did help us; sometimes, it didn’t.”

It may be noted that the filmmakers made many changes to the script. “For example, we’ve removed adult scenes because we wanted this to be a family film.”

“Our protagonists usually are portrayed as a person with physical strength, moral convictions or money power, but in this case, Laal is unlike any other hero. He’s a simple person. He’s just pure and innocent with no negative thinking, at all. We want families and children to watch him.”

“We also adapted the movie to Indian culture and social realities. But we tried to keep the spirit and heart of the film intact. We’ve come close to what we were trying to make, even after these many years,” he added.

Aamir Khan also stated that he has no reservations about doing adaptations or remakes. For, he feels that the material will be new for him/filmmakers.

All praise for Naga Chaitanya

Meanwhile, Aamir was all praise for Naga Chaitanya. He lauded the youngster’s talent, discipline and professionalism. Calling him “a well brought-up child”, the Bollywood actor said: “Chaitanya is a good human being in whom I found a friend”.

Chiranjeevi said that he was proud to be presenting this movie, his maiden venture. “I’m presenting this film because of my love and respect for Aamir, his passion for filmmaking and for what he is as an individual.”

Naga Chaitanya revealed that working with Aamir was an “experience for a lifetime”.

The makers released the first music video – Kahani – which drew a good response from the film-lovers.

The movie is set to hit the screens on 11 August.
