Actor, director, dance choreographer and producer Raghava Lawrence on Monday, 9 October, categorically told his fans that he did not want them at his film functions because he did not want to encroach upon their time.

He was addressing a press conference organised by the unit of director Karthik Subbaraj’s Jigarthanda Double X where the actor plays one of the leads along with SJ Suryah.

“I have learnt that my fans are feeling bad for not inviting them to my film functions. They think that ‘Master’ does not improve fan clubs, he does not release his stills or pictures, he does not inaugurate the fan clubs and award positions in those clubs to fans,” Lawrence noted.

He also explained the reason behind his decision.

“I will neither assign responsibilities nor invite you to my film functions, for I do not wish to encroach upon your time. I, too, was a fan before I became a star. So, I know how much you will have to spend to attend these events. I won’t encourage you and then gift you a picture to make you happy. I don’t need your claps for any of my stage shows or audio functions.”

Raghava Lawrence added, “You spend a lot on bus fare, hotels, and food. Please spend that money on your parents. Spend your time on your work. I will not use you.”

Understanding the fact that his fans are eager to appreciate him in one way or the other and hence are longing to attend his film fuctions, the actor said, “We are happy only because you buy tickets and watch our films in theatres. Your money goes to the exhibitors and then to the distributors. It then comes to the producers and then to my pocket. This, by itself, is a big help from your end.”

Lawrence concluded his speech by saying, “You are already helping us a lot by watching our film. On top of that, I do not want to invite you to my film functions. I am okay even if you feel bad about my stand. If you stay at home and wish for five minutes that my film must become a hit, that is more than enough for me.”

The film marks the return of KT Kunjumon to film production. Best known for delivering blockbuster hits like director Shankar’s Gentleman (1993), and Kadhalan (1994), Kunjumon moved out of the film production for a while.

Directed by A Gokul Krishna, Gentleman 2 is the second film in the popular franchise. It has music by Oscar winner MM Keeravani and lyrics by Six-time National Award-winning lyricist Vairamuthu.

Sources close to the producer said that he preferred to kick-start the shooting of his comeback film at Sathya Studios as he shared some special memories with the place.

“Kunjumon enjoyed phenomenal growth in the industry by distributing the movies of MGR and the films that were created by Sathya Studios. So, he was sentimentally attached to the place and wanted Gentleman 2‘s shoot to start there,” sources revealed.

The shooting will continuously be held in Chennai for the next 26 days. It will be followed by other schedules in Hyderabad, Malaysia, Dubai, Sri Lanka and several other exotic locations.

The cinematography is by Ajayan Vincent and the art direction is by Thota Tharrani.

Gentleman 2 features Chethan, Nayanthara Chakravarthy, and Priya Lal in the lead roles. It also casts Prachika, Sithara, Sudharani, Sri Ranjini, Sathya Priya, Suman, Achutha Kumar, Mime Gopi, Badava Gopi, Pugazh, Munish Raja, Radha Ravi, Imman Annachi, and Vela Ramamoorthi in pivotal roles.
