Even as news broke out about the Rashtrapati Bhavan sending out invites for a G20 dinner on 9 September in the name of the “President of Bharat” instead of “President of India”, Tamil film producer and actor Vishnu Vishal wondered why the name change had been effected and how it would help the country’s progress and economy.

Taking to the social media platform X to voice his thoughts on the issue, he wrote, “Thinking deep from this shoot location. What? Name change? But why? How does this help our country’s progress and its economy?”

He added, “This is the strangest news I’ve come across in recent times. India was always Bharat. We always knew our country as INDIA AND BHARAT. Why suddenly dispense INDIA? #Justasking #India #MeraBharatMahaan.”

Sehwag supports move

The actor also responded to a tweet put out by cricketer Virender Sehwag, expressing support for the move.

Sehwag, in his tweet, which was put out as a response to a claim that he had known all along about the name change, said, “I have always believed a name should be one which instils pride in us. We are Bhartiyas. India is a name given by the British and it has been long overdue to get our original name ‘Bharat’ back officially. I urge the @BCCI @JayShah to ensure that this World Cup, our players have Bharat on our chest.”

Responding to this, Vishnu Vishal quipped, “Sir, with due respect, the name INDIA didn’t instill pride in you all these years?”
