Hello Mummy review: Sharafudheen and Aishwarya Lekshmi shine in this engaging horror-comedy

Debutant director Vaisakh Elans and writer Sanjo Jose's focus on a strong script gave the film a strong structure. From the first scene itself, it is made evidently clear that the film is a horror comedy.

Horror comedies aren’t always welcome in Malayalam as compared to Tamil films where the Kanchana series and Aranmanai series have worked in theatres.

However, the 2023 release Romancham was a pleasant surprise as it became a blockbuster at the box office.

Coming to the latest horror comedy Hello Mummy, the film garnered huge buzz in a short time, all thanks to its intriguing trailer, and other promotional activities. The lead actor Sharafudheen’s presence too added to the anticipation, as he is known for his comedy roles.

What’s all this Hello Mummy? Eager to know about it? Let’s see what the movie has to offer.

Synopsis

Boney, played by Sharafudheen is a carefree person, who owns a pet shop. In his search for a bride, he meets Stephy played by Aishwarya Lekshmi.

However, Stephy doesn’t have a normal life, she can speak to her mother’s spirit, who died 22 years ago. Stephy marries Boney after laying down a set of rules as instructed by her mother’s spirit.

The comedy of errors that follow, Boney’s encounter with the spirit, and many such hilarious moments are the highlights of the first half of Hello Mummy.

The second half gives an insight into the life of Stephy and her mom. A few scenes also include Jagdish, who plays the role of Aishwarya Lekshmi’s dad.

Debutant director Vaisakh Elans and writer Sanjo Jose’s focus on a strong script gave the film a strong structure. From the first scene itself, it is made evidently clear that the film is a horror comedy.

The slapstick comedy scenes between Adhri Joe, Sharafudheen and Joemon Jothir have evoked major laughs. Another scene that made the theatre erupt in laughter was the first encounter of Boney with the spirit.

As mentioned previously, the second half deals with the lives of Stephy and her father who were in Shimla for a long time. The introduction of Bindhu Panicker as Kanjamma who is a witch hunter was unique.

However, some scenes involving the character played by Johny Antony, Boney’s father, were repetitive.

A few aspects that didn’t work, or lacked clarity were with regard to the backstory of Stephy and her mother.

Questions such as why the ghost or spirit possessed so much power, or the uncertainty surrounding the identity of the “Bahoda” sect, who practice witchcraft, need further clarification.

Apart from these, the movie has good entertainment value with colourful songs by Jakes Bejoy. His background music also elevated the scenes. The edit by Chaman Chacko was also crisp, but the emotional scenes involving Stephy and her mom could have been more crisper. The cinematography by Praveen Kumar also did justice to the genre of the movie.

The performances

Hello Mummy has an amazing performance by Sharafudheen who has pulled off Boney with much-needed energy, with his scenes with the spirit being the standout ones. His chemistry with Aishwarya Lekshmi as a couple has come out well.

For Aishwarya Lekshmi, Stephy was a different role from the ones she did previously. Her emotional moments with her mother have also come out well.

On the other hand, for Jagadish, the role of Samuel, father of Stephy was a cakewalk role for the veteran actor. Sunny Hinduja as Ashaba, who is the antagonist belonging to the “Bahoda” sect had a decent performance.
