Kaathal-The Core, directed by Jeo Baby, is receiving more appreciation after its OTT release. The movie was recently released on Amazon Prime Video.

The Mammootty and Jyothika-starrer had a good run in theatres. It also triggered discussions about the LGBTQ community issues.

The movie’s highlight is Mammootty, who enjoys a superstar status in Malayalam, readily playing a closeted gay man.

The movie was hailed for highlighting a sensitive topic in mainstream cinema with a bankable actor leading the movie. It was also criticised by a section of people in the queer community for being “queerphobic”.

What a beautiful performance from one of our absolute best. plays a difficult part with such honesty and empathy she moves you. Must see her more often. Great ensemble. What a director Jeo Baby is. So much to learn.”

In a friendly gesture, Tamil director Gautam Vasudev Menon appreciated Sudhi Kozhikode, who played Thankan in the film.

The ace director added that Kaathal was a “strong movie and yet, it was subtle”.

Anoop Menon’s response

After watching Kaathal-The Core, Malayalam actor Anoop Menon noted that it brought back the golden era of Malayalam film.

In his Facebook post, the actor wrote: “Saw KAATHAL. At a time when original Malayalam cinema was stooping low to mindless masala fares of Telugu and Bollywood, the shockingly original director Jeo Baby, with his amazingly talented writers Adarsh and Paulson, has brought back the ethos and elegance that the likes of KG George, Padmarajan, Lohitadas, Bharathan and MT had bestowed on Malayalam cinema… Those films have made us what we are before the world…”

Applauding Mammootty, the actor wrote: “And mamukka, you will be remembered for eternity as the only actor who could straddle every possible kind of cinema with equal aplomb…without you lending your stardom, Jeo couldn’t have reached such a large audience or even made this film ..thankyou from an ardent film lover for this mighty magnanimity…”
