After Acharya’s box office debacle, actor Chiranjeevi is now gearing up for the grand release of his forthcoming film Godfather.

Helmed by Mohan Raja, the film is a remake of the 2019 Malayalam super-hit Lucifer. This political action drama also features Bollywood superstar Salman Khan and Lady Superstar Nayanthara in key roles.

With only a few weeks left for the release of Godfather in theatres, the makers have decided to kick-start the promotions.

As part of that, they released an audio clip containing an intense political dialogue delivered by Chiranjeevi. They also announced the movie’s pre-release date at Anantapur. The team is planning on heavily promoting Godfather till its release.

Producers to release Godfather

Now, the latest buzz is that the producers will release the film themselves as Chiranjeevi reportedly stopped them from selling the distribution rights — both in the domestic and overseas markets.

If the reports are anything to go by, Chiranjeevi has asked the producers to do so since he doesn’t want to burden the distributors as happened in the case of Acharya. For the unversed, Acharya’s distributors incurred huge losses which were later compensated by its director Koratala Siva.

The other reason is that no distributor expressed willingness to buy Godfather at the quoted price.

Moreover, since NV Prasad — one of the producers of Godfather and a close friend of Chiranjeevi — has his own distribution network, it is believed that the film’s distribution won’t be an issue. Meanwhile, the producers are said to be happy with the final product and confident about releasing the Chiranjeevi-starrer themselves.

The theatrical rights of Godfather are valued at ₹90 crore, according to the makers. The film needs to collect a lot more than ₹90 crore worldwide for it to be considered a hit.

Meanwhile, a source in the industry told South First that Netflix has procured Godfather’s digital rights (Telugu and Hindi) for ₹57 crore, while its satellite rights have been sold for ₹60 crore.

Producers RB Choudary and NV Prasad are bankrolling the film jointly under the banners of Konidela Production Company and Super Good Films. The film also stars Satyadev Kancharana, Puri Jagannadh, Murali Sharma, Samuthirakani, and Tanya Ravichandran in crucial roles.

The movie is slated for release on 5 October in both languages, coinciding with the festival of Vijayadashami. There are rumours that it might get postponed too. More details are awaited.
