Nasser statement FEFSI

South Indian Artistes’ Association (SIAA) President Nasser clarified that there was no truth in the news that a resolution was passed to stop actors from other industries from entering the Tamil film industry.

His reaction came in the wake of the frayed tempers over the news of a recent decision of the Film Employees Federation of South India — a federation of 23 unions of the Tamil film industry — suggesting that only Tamil workers be employed in Tamil films.

‘Wrong news doing rounds’

In a video clip sent to journalists, Nasser clarified, “There is wrong news going around in the media that actors from other languages would not be entertained in the Tamil industry. It is a wrong statement. It is mischievous information. If this kind of resolution is taken in the Tamil film industry, I would be the first to raise my voice against it.”

Pointing out that we were now in an era of pan-Indian and global films, Nasser stressed the fact that every film needed actors and talents from other industries and therefore, nobody would take this kind of decision.

Clarifying what FEFSI President RK Selvamani was seeking to do, Nasser said, “To protect the workers in the Tamil film industry, Selvamani took some serious decisions to ensure that they are engaged in the filmmaking process which happens inside the boundaries of Tamil Nadu. It is about workers’ rights and protection and not about talents or actors.”

He further added, “The Tamil film industry has a great and long tradition where talents from other industries are encouraged, invited, loved, and respected. From SV Ranga Rao garu to Savithri amma to Vani Sree garu, we have a long tradition.”

‘Let us together make great films’

Further, the SIAA President remarked, “My dear brothers from the fraternity, don’t take this information seriously. It is not right. Together, we’ll make films and take them globally. We can do it and we have started making it. So, let us be together to make great films.”

Nasser’s clarification came in the wake of Telugu actor Pawan Kalyan’s recent appeal to the FEFSI to withdraw its resolution to employ only Tamil people in the Tamil film industry.

Speaking at the audio launch of his film Bro, Pawan said the Tamil film industry would not flourish if it restricts access to others.

Meanwhile, sources in the industry stated that FEFSI President RK Selvamani is likely to address a press conference on Monday to clear the confusion caused by the resolution.
