Investigation films aren’t new to Mammootty and his character Sethurama Aiyar (CBI series films) has been popular among movie buffs.
Mammootty is back in another investigation film, Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse. This time, he’s teamed up with Tamil director Gautham Vasudev Menon, who is making his Malayalam debut. Unlike typical crime thrillers, this movie has a lighter tone.
Dominic and the Ladies’ Purse joins the slew of investigative thrillers, Malayalam cinema saw this past month.
In Dominic and the Ladies Purse, Mammootty plays Dominic, the titular character, a former cop who now runs a detective agency in Kochi. Vicky (Gokul Suresh) is appointed as his assistant. The movie follows their investigations, including typical cases like extramarital affairs, which add a comedic touch in the beginning.
The story takes a serious turn when Dominic’s landlady, Madhuri (Viji Venkatesh), asks him to find the owner of a purse she found in a hospital. This investigation becomes the main plot, with the mystery of the purse driving the story forward.
The writers add comedy to keep the audience engaged. As Dominic and Vicky dig deeper, they uncover many truths. The first half sets the tone for the film, making it clear what to expect.
As the investigation progresses, they discover the owner is missing, and they start looking into the disappearance. Dominic uncovers a web of mystery and multiple people’s involvement, which is revealed at the end — a major highlight of the film.
The script of Dominic and the Ladies Purse is written by Neeraj Rajan, Sooraj Rajan, and Gautham Menon. The settings are well-crafted, with each character playing an important role.
Mammootty’s character is a former policeman who hasn’t achieved much in life, but he’s a sharp investigator. He understands cases well and makes accurate interpretations. The film shows various examples to build his character.

The second half is more intriguing, with new revelations about the purse case, which becomes the major highlight.
The climax, particularly the final 30 minutes, is crucial and may spark future discussions. It’s a sensitive topic, so revealing more would be a spoiler.
The movie features a strong technical team that delivers a high-quality product. The cinematography by Vishnu Dev is impressive, with scenes in Kochi and Munnar shot beautifully.
The background score and music by Darbuka Siva are major highlights. And, after a long time, Mammootty is seen dancing to a song in this movie. The stunts are also impressive.
Overall, Gautham Menon’s film is technically sound, and the movie uses sync sound effectively.
