Renowned music composer, lyricist, and director V Manohar is all set to return to filmmaking with a political satire — Darbar (a king’s court).
Manohar started his career as a cartoonist. He contributed his works to several leading newspapers before venturing into films as a composer.
Tharle Nan Maga (Naughty Fellow), a film released in 1992, marked his debut as music director and that of Real Star Upendra as director.

“I started as a cartoonist, contributing to a few leading vernacular newspapers before I made my debut as music composer and assistant director for Uppi’s Tharle Nan Maga. But politics always intrigued me. Hence, I continued sketching political cartoons,” V Manohar shared during Darbar’s promotional event.
However, Manohar rose to stardom with Janumada Jodi (A Couple in this Birth) in 1996. Directed by TS Nagabharana and produced under the Vaishnavi Combines banner, the film starred Dr Shiva RajKumar and Chippy in the lead roles.
Janumada Jodi is considered one of the best musical film albums in the Kannada film industry.
The music composer-director said he got busy composing for films and television serials post-Indradhanush (Rainbow). This Shiva Rajkumar and Abhisarika-starrer was released in 2000.
“After my previous movie as director, I got too busy. Though I kept getting good offers for direction, nothing materialised. Finally, after 23 years, I am directing a film titled Darbar,” Manohar said.
He noted that he always wanted to direct a film that revolved around politics.
“I met Satish while I was busy working as a composer for another film. He narrated a story that had elements of politics. We decided to work on it. But the lockdown period delayed it further. Eventually, we completed the shoot of our film which will be a political satire,” he explained.
Darbar also stars senior actors like Ashok, MN Lakshmi Devi, and Sadhu Kokila.
Satish is producing the film and is also the male lead.
The movie has a vital message embedded in it as it talks about the importance of electing the right candidate during the elections.
