December releases in kollywood

In the month of December, a host of Tamil films are gearing up for a grand release to entertain audiences in Kollywood.

The Tamil box office will witness a tough fight as actors Vijay Sethupathi, Vishal, Vishnu Vishal, Vadivelu and Kovai Sarala are all set to vie with each other for success.

Apart from major films, Avatar 2 (dubbed) and Nayanthara-Prithviraj’s Gold (Malayalam-dubbed) are also hitting the screens. Here’s the list of December releases:

DSP

The month starts with a bang from Vijay Sethupathi and director Ponram’s DSP. The actor will be seen as a deputy superintendent of police, the highest-ranking police official.

Earlier, he played a cop in Sethupathi (2016) which was a hit.

The trailer of DSP created quite a buzz, thanks to the action sequences and Ponram-brand comedy.

It casts Anukeerthy Vas and Prabhakar in key roles. D Imman is the music director and Stone Bench Films is the production house. DSP will hit the screens on 2 December.

Gatta Kusthi

Vishnu Vishal is all set to try his luck at the box office with Gatta Kusthi, directed by Chella Ayyavu. It is a sports drama featuring Aishwarya Lekshmi as the female lead.

Telugu actor Ravi Teja is jointly producing it with Vishnu Vishal, Shubra and Aryan Ramesh. It is being shot simultaneously in Telugu as Matti Kusthi.

Vishnu Vishal’s latest release FIR, an action thriller, received critical acclaim.

Justin Prabhakaran is composing the music. The movie will hit the screens on 2 December.

Naai Sekar Returns

Next in line for December releases is the biggest comeback saga: Naai Sekar Returns.

On 9 December, Vaigai Puyal Vadivelu will be seen playing a detective in Naai Sekar Returns. The actor is making a comeback to the silver screen, after a long gap of five years.

He was last seen in Vijay’s Mersal (2017) and it disappointed his fans.

Naai Sekar Returns is a dark comedy film directed by Suraaj and produced by Lyca Productions. Santhosh Narayanan is the music director.

It also features Rao Ramesh, Anandaraj, Munishkanth, Redin Kingsley, Shivaangi Krishnakumar, and Shivani Narayanan in key roles.

Vadivelu played a small-time thug who poses as a big-time killer in Suraaj’s action crime movie Thalai Nagaram (2006). However, his character, Naai Sekar, became popular and the present film is no sequel to it.

The makers announced the release date of the film and recently released the first single which was crooned by the comedian himself. The second single is out too and got a positive response.

Laththi

Vishal is coming up with Laththi on 22 December. It’s directed by A Vinoth Kumar and produced by Nanda and Ramana under the banner of Rana Productions.

Since Vishal registered no hits after Irumbu Thirai in 2018, so much is riding on Laththi. The actor plays a constable and did some high-octane action scenes choreographed by Peter Hein.

Sunaina and Prabhu will appear in the main roles. Yuvan Shankar Raja scored the music.

After several postponements, Laththi finally got a release date.

Sembi

December ends with Red Giant Movies releasing Sembi (30 December) directed by Prabu Solomon.

The film has Kovai Sarla in a pivotal role. At the trailer release function, Kamal Haasan was all praise for the actress.

Prabu’s offbeat films like Kumki (2012), Myna (2013), Kayal (2014) and Thodari (2016) were hits and critically acclaimed.

Sembi is about a bus journey from Kodaikanal to Dindigul.

Actor Ashwin Kumar Lakshmikanthan plays a major role in it. He was last seen Telugu anthology Meet Cute, now streaming on Sony LIV.
