Varisu and Thunivu Day 2 box office collections

The Day 2 (Thursday) collections of Ajith’s Thunivu and Vijay’s Varisu sent shockwaves in Kollywood as both the films suffered a fall in the amount.

The box office figures accessed by South First show that the first-day euphoria and collections dimmed considerably. This goes against the calculations of the distributors who expected that the theatres would run houseful from 11–17 January.

Reliable sources said that Thunivu collected ₹22 crore in Tamil Nadu on Day 1 and just ₹15 crore on Day 2. In the top-grossing areas like Chennai and Coimbatore, it witnessed a drop in the occupancy rate from 98 to 68 percent.

Meanwhile, Varisu recorded an opening collection of ₹20 crore in Tamil Nadu on Day 1 and ₹16 crore on Day 2. The theatre occupancy rate in main centres dropped to 77 percent.

Already, videos of theatres with empty seats are doing the rounds on social media, thanks to fans of Ajith and Vijay.

The decision to release the films on Wednesday seems to have backfired for the makers; for, these two days saw lakhs of people in urban areas travel to their native places to celebrate the Pongal festival.

Meanwhile, exhibitors feel that Varisu may do well in the coming holidays, given the family sentiment it carries. However, they are worried about the negative and mixed reviews that the film has received since its release.

The exhibitors are also expecting that the Vijay-starrer would collect around ₹13–14 crore and the Ajith-starrer around ₹15 crore on Friday.

With Pongal holidays extending till next Wednesday, 18 January, Varisu has a chance to draw family crowds to cinema halls and may turn the tables. Let’s see what’s in store for the films!
