The Kannada romantic-musical drama Premaloka (1987) will soon get a sequel in the coming days.

According to reports from Qatar, Crazy Star V Ravichandran, who directed the iconic film that broke several records at the box office 36 years ago, is gearing up to make the sequel to his most successful movie.

Ravichandran, along with his better half Sumathy, were in Qatar on the occasion of the 68th Kannada Rajyotsava organised by the members of the Karnataka Sangha. The couple was honoured at the event.

While addressing the gathering, the showman of the Kannada film industry assured his fans that he would soon make Premaloka 2.

Made under the home banner Sri Productions, the film was presented by Ravichandran’s father Veeraswamy, a highly respected and notable filmmaker back then.

Other than Kannada, it was made in Tamil as Paruva Ragam (1987). Later, it was dubbed in Telugu as Premalokam (1988).

It starred Ravichandran and Juhi Chawla in the lead. Hamsalekha made his debut as a music director by composing 11 tracks for the film.

Following the huge success of Premaloka, Hamsalekha went on to become a prolific composer.

The film’s music album released by Lahari sold more than 36 lakh cassettes.

The movie ran for at least one year in theatres and introduced the concept of multi-star, with at least eight actors playing the supporting roles and three mega-stars making guest appearances.

Dr Vishnuvardhan, Dr Ambareesh, and actress Urvashi made guest appearances in the Kannada version. Ambareesh was replaced by Thengai Srinivasan in the Tamil version.

While Premaloka was almost declared a failure with poor response from the audience for the first few weeks, it picked up pace following great word-of-mouth publicity and went on to break several records at the box office.

However, the Tamil version failed due to stiff competition from big films released alongside it.
