Vishak Nair as Sanjay Gandhi

Malayalam actor Vishak Nair has been selected to play Sanjay Gandhi’s role in Emergency, being directed by Bollywood actor Kangana Ranaut. The actor revealed the news on his Instagram account.

Kangana will be seen as former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi in the flick. Sanjay is Indira Gandhi’s politician-son.

Anupam Kher will essay the role of Jayaprakash Narayan, while Mahima Chaudhry will be seen as Pupul Jayakar, Milind Soman as Sam Maneckshaw and Shreyas Talpade as AB Vajpayee in Emergency.

Emergency is not a biopic of Indira Gandhi. It is a grand period film. To be precise, it is a political drama that will help my generation to understand the socio-political landscape of current India,” Kangana said about the movie recently.

Vishak Nair is popular with his on-screen name “Kuppi” which he essayed in the blockbuster film Anandam (2016), directed by Ganesh Raj. He was last seen in a cameo in Pranav Mohanlal’s Hridyam for which he was the casting director.

Anandam clicked with many college-going students. It is about seven engineering students who take a study tour and return home with changed hearts.

Ponniyin Selvan-1 sarees flood market

Director Mani Ratnam’s period drama Ponniyin Selvan-1 is in the news for yet another feat. The Ponniyin Selven sarees, flaunting the pics of the actors, have flooded the market and caught the attention of women.

This usually happens after a film’s release. But, in this case, the trend started two weeks before the movie’s theatrical release. Red Giant of Udhaynidhi is distributing the film.

Meanwhile, the flick is up for censor certification. The makers have applied for an earlier date for all five versions (South Indian languages and Hindi). In the wake of any major objection from the Censor Board, Mani Ratnam will have to accept the cuts or approach a revising committee.

According to sources in the Censor Board, the makers think that the dialogues will be an area of trouble. It may be noted here that PS-1’s trailer already came under the scrutiny of Tamil literary groups. There were spelling mistakes in the trailer and they were corrected in the latest version.

Meanwhile, the buzz is that the rights for PS-1 have been bought for Rs 125 crore in all languages. If Silambarasan’s Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu, which is releasing on 15 September, can hold the ground till 29 September, PS-1 cannot be screened in more theatres. If Dhanush’s Naane Varuven hits the big screens on 29 September, there will be a tough fight at the box office.

STR to helm 10 projects

Tamil actor Silambarasan aka STR has announced that he has 10 scripts in his kitty, which he would direct. He will also play the lead role in these projects. Patthu Thala by Krishna, Corona Kumar and a Tamil remake of the Kannada film Mufti are some of the flicks in the pipeline.

In 2006, STR turned director with Vallavan which had Nayanthara as the female lead. He will be seen in Vendhu Thanindhathu Kaadu (VTK), Gautham Menon’s directorial, which is all set to hit the theatres on 16 September.

Being released after the spectacular hit Maanaadu, VTK has STR’s fans eagerly waiting for the hit combo of Gautham-Simbu to scorch the silver screen. The first-day first show of VTK is at 4 AM.
