Dulquer thought of quitting films!

Dulquer Salmaan, popular as DQ among his fans, is eagerly awaiting the release of his upcoming flick Chup: Revenge of the Artist (Hindi) starring Sunny Deol, Shreya Dhanwanthary and Pooja Bhatt.

Directed by R Balki, the film is about a serial killer who targets film critics writing bad reviews. It is said to be an ode to Guru Dutt’s Kaagaz Ke Phool. It will hit the silver screen on 23 September.

In an interview, Dulquer said that he frequently reads negative articles about him. “Some of them suggested that I should give up acting since I’m not cut out for it. It’s usually the same thing that I shouldn’t be here. This is not my calling. It’s really harsh.”

One day, Dulquer approached his actor-father Mammootty wondering if he should give up acting. “To this, my father told me that he too was criticised in the 70s, but was advised to take the criticism in the right stride,” the Sita Ramam actor recalled.

Meanwhile, National Award winner Balachandra Menon recently mentioned on his Facebook account that he found many similarities between Dulquer-starrer Sita Ramam (Telugu) and the Hollywood film Roman Holiday.

In the post, he appreciated that the film picked up steam through word-of-mouth and felt that it was the right way for a movie to click. Most of the readers agreed and some saw a hidden agenda in the post.

The box office collections of Sita Ramam showed that it got a lukewarm response everywhere, except in the Telugu market. In Hindi too, it has put up an average show.

Dulquer’s home market Kerala had initially rejected it, but later, his fans were pressed to make it look a hit. The film had many pro-Hinduvata references. Many felt that it was a Veer Zara rehashed.

Clash of titans at BO in Tollywood

This September-end and for Dasara, the box office will witness an interesting clash of titans.

The Telugu versions of Mani Ratnam’s Ponniyin Selvam-1 and Dhanush’s Naane Varuvean are releasing in theatres on 30 September. Producer Dil Raju is the distributor for the Telugu version of PS-1, while Allu Aravind of Geetha Arts is the distributor for Naane Varuvean (Nene Vasthunnaa in Telugu) in Andhra Pradesh.

Meanwhile, Chiranjeevi’s Godfather and Nagarjuna’s The Ghost are hitting the big screens on the same day: 5 October.

Trade analysts are of the opinion that Nagarjuna should have shifted the release date of The Ghost since Chiranjeevi’s Godfather is going to give it a cut-throat competition. However, the movie’s distributors felt that the Dasara holidays — from 25 September to 9 October — are the right time to draw crowds to cinema halls.

For the first time, Nagarjuna’s film got huge expectations than that of Chiranjeevi. Mumbai-based Gold Mines is likely to clinch the Hindi version of The Ghost and release it in North India the same day. The trailer was riveting and made trade sit up and take notice.

Since Chiranjeevi’s Godfather is a remake of the Malayalam flick Lucifer, it is believed to have lost the surprise element. Hence, the makers are promoting the film by roping in Salman Khan, Pawan Kalyan and Venkatesh.
