Birthday special: Sundeep Kishan turns 37 on 7 May

Telugu actor Sundeep Kishan may have emerged as a relatively prominent figure in the South Indian film industry, but he has had his share of struggles and setbacks in his 14 years of film career.

From working as an assistant for Gautham Vasudev Menon in Chennai to missed opportunities in some of the blockbuster movies like Happy Days (2007) and Ashta Chamma (2008) in Telugu during his formative years, Sundeep never lost hope in dreaming big.

As he turns a year older on Tuesday, 7 May, here are some of the must-watch films of Sundeep Kishan:

The first on the must-watch list is Venkatadri Express (2013).

The story is about the youngest son in the family Sandeep (played by Sundeep Kishan). His Ram Murthy (Nagineedu) has a tough time bearing his son’s antics.

According to the dictum in the family, those who commit 100 mistakes are expelled from the house as a punishment. Sandeep is one mistake away from 100.

Meanwhile, the family sets off to the wedding of Sandeep’s elder brother Brahmaji. As the entire family boards the Venkatadri Express to Tirupati, Sandeep misses it.

Afraid of being ostracised from the family, Sandeep tries his best to reach the destination. Will he be exempted from the rule set by his father? What happens to Sandeep during the journey is the rest of the story.

Though Venkatadri Express completed nine years, it is one of the most celebrated Telugu films in Sundeep Kishan’s career.

It is raved for its gripping screenplay and comedy from Thagubothu Ramesh, MS Narayana, and Sapthagiri.

The movie was directed by Merlapaka Gandhi.

As time unfolds, Vishnu finds himself captivated by girl Ganga (played by Seerat Kapoor), a spirited individual hailing from Kasi.

However, their love story faces an obstacle when Ganga’s parents discover their daughter’s relationship and resolve to put an end to it by any means necessary.

Tiger takes decisive action to protect Vishnu and Ganga from the tumultuous situation that is threatening to engulf their lives.

The film Tiger is hailed as an emotionally charged drama delivered through cinematic finesse.

While investigating, inspector Ranjith Kumar suspects a mechanic, a villager, and a youngster from a middle-class family.

This mega robbery involves the lives of four individuals — a humiliated son-lover boy (Aadhi Pinishetty), a petty thief (Sundeep Kishan), a funny mechanic (Rajendra Prasad) and, a dejected motherless son played by Sudheer Babu.

Upon discovering that all four individuals were present at a party in the same hotel, Ranjith initiates a thorough investigation, scrutinising each suspect one by one.

Despite connecting all the dots, the truth remains elusive.

Though the storyline had nothing new to offer, the performances of the lead characters and the screenplay are what make it an enjoyable watch.

Nagaram (2017), a Telugu-dubbed Tamil original, is praised as a standalone masterpiece in both the careers of Sundeep and director Lokesh Kanagaraj.

The film centres on four characters portrayed by Sundeep Kishan, Shri, Munishkanth, and Charlie.

Shri is a practical youth hailing from a rural area. Sundeep plays a brave man who is deemed irresponsible for his aggressive manner. His only job is to admire Regina Cassandra, an HR personnel in an IT company.

A migrant taxi driver (Charlie) visits the city for the treatment of his ailing son.

A group of three goondas field a Munishkanth to kidnap a child, but the latter ends up kidnapping the son of a dreaded don (Madhusudhanan).

The wrong kidnap, Sundeep’s decision to teach a lesson to the acid-attacker, and Shri’s bad luck, all trigger a chain of events.

Nagaram is praised for its storyline, which relies heavily on coincidences, making it intellectually stimulating.

The Telugu film successfully maintained the audience’s engagement, with the acid-attack incident serving as an example.
