Basil Joseph bags Asian Academy Award for Minnal Murali

He won the award for his directorial venture Minnal Murali, a superhero movie starring Tovino Thomas, which was released on Netflix in 2021.

Basil Joseph bagged the Best Director award at the Asian Academy Awards 2022 held in Singapore on Thursday, 8 December.

He was selected from among the directors hailing from 16 Asian countries. He won the award for his directorial venture Minnal Murali, a superhero movie starring Tovino Thomas.

Sharing the news through social media, Basil thanked the cast and crew of the film.

“I feel overwhelmed and honoured to be declared as the Best Director among 16 countries at the Asian Academy Awards 2022 here in Singapore.”

“Today, I feel prouder than ever to be a part of the Malayalam movie industry and to represent India on this stage. I am convinced that this recognition has brought us one step closer to the global stage,” he wrote on Facebook.

“Here’s a huge heartfelt hug to our producers, Netflix, actors, writers, cinematographer and the entire cast and crew — thank you for believing in me. This superhero wouldn’t have emerged without you,” he added.

Several celebrities, including Tovino Thomas and Sanju Samson, showered praises on Basil Joseph for winning the prestigious award.

“We (India) have been creating good content for years since the time of Satyajit Ray and several others, and I’m honoured that I am a small part of that. I feel great to represent India on a global stage,” said Basil receiving the award.

A critically acclaimed superhero film

Minnal Murali was released through Netflix on 24 December 2021. The film got pan-Indian attention and was critically acclaimed for its cast, writing, direction, action sequences, VFX and soundtrack.

It also received several awards, including the Kerala State Film Awards. The movie helped register Minnal Murali as a next-door superhero in the minds of the audience.

It is written by Arun Anirudhan and Justin Mathew. Sophia Paul is the producer.

Sushin Shyam is the music director and Sameer Thahir is the cinematographer.

Tamil actor Guru Somasundaram performed as the antagonist in Minnal Murail.

The other cast included Aju Varghese, Baiju, Harishree Asokan, Mamukoya, Femina George, Bijukuttan, Baiju, Sneha Babu, and Jude Anthony Joseph.
