AR Rahman's defamation notice comes in the wake of the Association of Surgeons alleging that he had failed to return a sum of ₹29.5 lakh.

Music director AR Rahman, who has denied all allegations levelled by The Association of Surgeons of India, has now sent a defamation notice to the association, seeking a public apology from them and a sum of ₹10 crore for defaming him.
Narmadha Sampath, the legal counsel for AR Rahman, in her notice sent to the legal counsel of the Association of Surgeons, said, “Your clients are hereby called upon to recall the notice dated 03.10.2023 within three days from today. You are also hereby called upon to issue a public apology immediately, prominently publicised for defaming my client.”
It further read, “My client also demands a sum of ₹10 crore within a period of 15 days from today as damages for the defaming the good reputation of my client, failing which my client will be constrained to initiate legal action against your client.”
Rahman’s defamation notice comes in the wake of the Association of Surgeons filing a complaint with the Chennai Police Commissioner, alleging that the music director had failed to return a sum of ₹29.50 lakh which they paid as advance for his performance during their annual national conference in 2018.
The Association, in its complaint, claimed that they were unable to conduct the musical event as they were unable to find a suitable venue and also get the necessary permission for it from the government.
The Association of Surgeons said this development was intimated to Rahman’s team and that a refund of the advance was sought.
The Association claimed that they were given a post-dated cheque which bounced and that despite repeated representations over two years, there had been no appropriate response from the music director or his team.
Refuting all these allegations, AR Rahman’s counsel, in the notice served to the Association of Surgeons, said that in the last five years, this was the first time that Rahman was made aware of these alleged transactions.
The counsel further said that Rahman never entered into any transaction with the Association of Surgeons at any point in time and also denied the allegation that they booked him for a show and paid an advance of ₹29.50 lakh to him.
“In order to gain media attention from the fame enjoyed by our client and in order to harass our client you have also chosen to name him in the complaint given to the Commissioner of Police Chennai,” the counsel claimed.
“The magnitude of your assault on the reputation, esteem and honour of my client is irreversible among the minds of the general public,” the counsel alleged and sought a public apology and a compensation amount of ₹10 crore.
