Imagine how Ravi Teja’s Vikramarkudu was trolled mercilessly for borrowing scenes from the 2002 film Sambhavi IPS, starring Vijaya Shanthi in the titular role.
Ten years after the controversy, the issue has popped up again.
There was massive trolling on the internet about how makers — SS Rajamouli and his writer-father Vijayendra Prasad — allegedly lifted scenes from the Vijayashanti’s movie.
Sambhavi IPS was written by the Paruchuri brothers and directed by KS Nageswara Rao. Vikramarkudu was written by Vijayendra Prasad (Rajamouli’s father) and directed by Rajamouli.
The mad brother of the antagonist in Sambhavi IPS celebrates his birthday. On the occasion, he tries to touch protagonist Sambhavi (played by Vijayashanthi) after stripping people around him for fun.
Sambhavi unloads the gun and drops bullets on the floor. As the mad brother charges towards her, he steps on the bullets eventually leading to his death.
You find the whole episode in Vikramarkudu and the dialogues too are more or less similar to Sambhavi IPS.
It may be recalled that Rajamouli responded to this controversy through X in 2014 with a series of tweets.
Now, 10 years after the controversy, his writer-father Vijayendra Prasad responded to the controversy.
He said it was his son Rajamouli who wanted the scene from Vijayashanthi’s film to be re-written for Vikramarkudu.
Vijayendra Prasad said he sought the permission of the producer of Sambhavi IPS before using the sequence for Ravi Teja’s movie.
The writer also clarified that it was not the aspect of plagiarism but a genuine approach to bring the desired impact for the scene.
Though Vikramarkudu received mixed talk, the film broke records in box office collections. It was later remade in Hindi, Tamil, Kannada, and Bengali languages.
Sambhavi IPS is the story of an upright IPS officer Sambhavi. She is wrongfully convicted of various murders.
After suffering betrayal, she is determined to avenge the back-stabbing take-on against her distractors.
