Sreeleela Bhagavanth Kesari

Actor Sreeleela hogged the limelight more for her dance moves than the characters she played in films so far in Telugu.

The Pelli SandaD (2021) actress initially worried when people expressed doubts about her choice to play the daughter of Nandamuri Balakrishna in the upcoming film Bhagavanth Kesari.

“Doing a daughter’s role is like going against the mainstream convention. Many people asked me why I am playing a daughter at this phase of my career. But I felt nothing wrong with it because I liked the story,” she told the media in Hyderabad on Friday, 13 October.

Sreeleela opined that female leads are often offered glam roles, but emotional characters are rarely offered.

“My role in Bhagavanth Kesari has an emotional drive. It has the space for performance. If not now, I can’t do it later. Sreeleela is known for dancing till now. But I believe I can break that notion now with my performance in the forthcoming flick.”

On Bhagavanth Kesari

Sreeleela was nervous when she first met senior actor Balakrishna, commonly referred to as Balayya.

“Though we keep hearing about Balakrishna garu, my heart was filled with fear when I first met him. The next moment, everything changed. Like his name Balakrishna, he is young at heart and sweet,” she said.

Bhagavanth Kesari is an action drama starring Balakrishna in the titular role of Nelakonda Bhagavanth Kesari. It also features Kajal Aggarwal, Sreeleela, Arjun Rampal, Priyanka Jawalkar, John Vijay. and Raj Tirandasu in key roles.

Directed by Anil Ravipud, the film is produced by Sahu Garapati and Harish Peddi. The music is composed by SS Thaman.

Sreeleela said director Anil Ravipudi changed his style of making because the story of Bhagavanth Kesari demanded certain characteristics and ingredients to pack the punch. “If you distinguish the glimpses of his earlier movies from Bhagavanth Kesari, say for example F2 (2019) or F3 (2022), the shade of Bhagavanth Kesari is quite unique.”

About her character, the actress said, “I played a loud character in Pelli SandaD and a subtle character in Dhamaka (2021). But here, Vijji Papa is a meek yet active and lively person. The story of Bhagavanth Kesari has been treated differently. Ravipudi garu has put more focus on characterisations.”

Sreeleela revealed that she was awestruck by Balakrishna’s knowledge. “He keeps sharing a lot of knowledge with me whenever we sneak out some time on the sets.”

She recalled, “One day, I just arrived on the set after completing my MBBS exam. The next moment, he started sharing with me about the activities at Basavatarakam Cancer Hospital. Though he didn’t study MBBS, he has a good hold on the medical field.”

She added, “He has an incredible brain. So that way, we built a bond. I have never seen him as an actor. Vijji Papa and Bhagavanth Kesari have so much in them more than what they performed on the screen.”

‘First a dancer, then an actor’

Now that she has become more or less a dancing icon for the audience, the actress says she wants to be a full-fledged artiste on the screen.

“I’velearnt the art of acting through dance. I am a Bharatanatyam dancer. I haven’t attended any acting school. If I have a dance in me that is because of classical dance. So, the rhythm leaves traces inside me,” she said.

The actress signed off by saying, “In classical dance art forms, if one has to tell a story, a dancer has to tell it just through his expressions. Now I am slowly learning how to mould myself as a director’s actor.”
