Well-known Tamil film actor and founder-president of the Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK) Captain Vijayakanth passed away at a private hospital in the city on the morning of 28 December.

He was 71.

He is survived by his wife Premalatha and two sons Shanmuga Pandian and Vijay Prabhakar Alagarswami.

Vijayakanth, who had been unwell for some time, had only recently recovered and returned home from a hospital.

He was admitted to the MIOT hospital again this morning after facing breathing difficulties.

A statement from MIOT said the actor had been admitted for pneumonia and that he was on ventilator support. However, despite the hospital staff’s best efforts, the actor passed away this morning.

The actor, who was also the Leader of the Opposition in the Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly from 2011 to 2016, acted in hundreds of films including several superhits and blockbusters such as Oomai Vizhigal (1986), Uzhavan Magan (1987), Pulan Visaranai (1990), Captain Prabhakaran (1991), Amman Kovil Kizhakale (1986), Chinna Gounder (1992), and Chatriyan (1990).

As soon as news of the demise of the Tamil film and political stalwart broke out, a pall of gloom descended over the Tamil film industry.

The Tamil Nadu Film Exhibitors’ Association, as a mark of respect to one of the most loved actors from the Tamil film industry, announced that the morning show in all theatres across the state will be cancelled.
