Having featured in films like Operation Gold Fish (2019) and Kousalya Krishnamurthy (2019), actor Karthik Raju’s dream to achieve a break in Telugu cinema remained unfulfilled until he unexpectedly pondered on a crime story — Atharva.

A crime thriller, Atharva will compete with Sandeep Reddy Vanga’s Animal at the box office on Friday, 1 December.

The movie features Karthik Raju, Simran Choudhary, and Ayraa in lead roles.

Directed by Mahesh Reddy and produced by Subhash Nuthalapati under Peggo Entertainments, Atharva is presented by Nuthalapati Narasimham and Anasuyamma.

In the world of crime-suspense thriller genres, the Tippu (2015) actor is optimistic that Atharva will stand out as a unique film by shedding light on the significance of the Clues department.

During a media interaction on Wednesday, 29 November, the actor shared his insights into his role and the film.

Karthik Raju said the unique narrative of Atharva attracted him in the first place.

“Portraying a character named Kanna with asthma disorder who later aspires to become a policeman but eventually ends up taking up a job in the Clues team added depth to the role,” he explained.

A small story to a thriller

The young actor praised producers Srinivas and Subhash Nuthalapati for their vision of making a good cinema, which he believes helped transform the film from a small story about a clues team to a riveting crime thriller.

Karthik Raju highlighted their dedication in various aspects, particularly in constructing specific sets for the film.

“Coming to the uniqueness of the script, unlike conventional crime suspense thrillers, Atharva distinguishes itself from others by showcasing the criminal case is solved without conventional clues,” he added.

He emphasised the importance of expressions in this genre, considering that Atharva heavily relies on the performances of its actors.

“Simran Choudhary plays a crime journalist, and Ayraa portrays the role of a film actor. The characters of Simran Choudhary and mine include a small flashback episode,” he revealed.

A special premiere show was organised for the Clues team, who rarely watch crime thrillers. The team appreciated team Atharva and praised his role and how it was portrayed.

“After Kausalya Krishnamurthy, I was offered many characters, but eventually Covid had hit the entire world. Two years went wasted. Now, I am selectively choosing the scripts. I am making sure that no mistake is made from my side. My new film is going on the floors on 7 December,” said Karthik Raju.

He added, “I completed a film with People’s Media Factory. I want to explore full-length entertainers that remind us of EVV Satyanarayana’s style and family-oriented films.”

Extensive research for Atharva

About the research that went behind Atharva, Karthik Raju elucidated, “The crafting of the Atharva involved thorough research and development and delving into various aspects of crime-solving methods. Clues essential for piecing together a puzzle and the mystery of a crime can originate from diverse sources such as the crime scene and individuals involved.”

He hastened to add, “Detectives who are often part of the Clues team interview witnesses, victims, and suspects to gather valuable information. Director Mahesh Reddy, who possesses a commendable understanding of the subject, explored the process quite well.”

Karthik Raju signed off by saying, “Several methods, including single-source DNA analysis, ballistics forensics, bloodstain pattern analysis, and fingerprint analysis contribute to unravelling the mystery behind a crime. Atharva promises to immerse audiences in the intricacies of these investigative techniques.”
