Actor Radikaa Sarathkumar called for a committee to investigate exploitation in the Tamil film industry, similar to the Justice Hema Committee that brought out the harassment faced by female actors in the Malayalam film industry.

She also disclosed that Malayalam superstar Mohanlal had contacted her to ask whether it was on his movie set that she had found hidden cameras in the caravans. The actor shared the screen with Mohanlal in Ittymaani: Made in China (2019).

Radikaa emphasised that she had already addressed the bad experiences she faced in the film sets and did not wish to pursue the matter further.

Speaking to the media channel Asianet News, Radikaa had shared that there were hidden cameras in the caravans of female actors, through which the actresses were filmed without their consent and knowledge.

The alleged incident

Elaborating on the issue, Radikaa revealed that she has seen men watching these recordings on their mobile phones. She further revealed that the visuals filmed were stored in separate folders on the phones of men, “Each folder has names of actresses whose visuals were there,” she claimed.

Speaking of her experience, Radikaa said, “I questioned the crew members then and there, and it was settled.” However, after the incident, Radikaa said, she was afraid to use a caravan and rather chose to stay in a hotel to change her clothes.

Refusing to name the movie set, Radikaa said, “I was disturbed and entirely avoided the caravan during the shooting of that movie.”

She confirmed that none of the leading actors were present during the incident but raised concerns that, it was evident that footage from the hidden camera was seen by the crew.

She demanded action from the production company to ensure the footage was deleted.

The publication of the Justice K Hema Committee report on harassment and abuse in the Malayalam film industry has opened a can of worms with several female actors stepping forward with disturbing accounts of the mistreatment they faced at the hands of their various male counterparts.

The Kerala government constituted the Justice Hema Committee after the 2017 actress assault case and its report revealed instances of harassment and exploitation of women in the Malayalam cinema industry.
