Known as "Rebel Star" by his die-hard fans, actor-politician late Dr Ambareesh was a force to be reckoned with in the Kannada film industry.
Hailing from Mandya district in Karnataka, MH Amarnath rose to stardom by his stage name Ambareesh in the Kannada film industry. His angry young man avatars on the silver screen earned him the title “Rebel Star”. Loved by all, Ambareesh certainly lived life king-size, both as a celebrated actor and as a politician.
As today marks the late actor’s 71st birth anniversary, his son, Abhishek Ambareesh, who is set to tie the knot with Aviva Bidapa on 5 June, paid tribute on the occasion — but with a difference.
Collaborating with KRG Connects, a sister concern of Karnataka’s premier production house and distributor KRG Studios, Abhishek shared a video featuring himself and his fiancée Aviva recreating some of “Rebel Star” Ambareesh’s popular songs.
This iconic romantic song is one of the most popular and unofficial “love anthems” for Kannada audiences — especially for “Rebel Star” fans.
The title song from the film Olavina Udugore (1987), featuring Ambareesh and Ilavarasi (Manjula Sharma), was composed by M Ranga Rao and sung by P Jayachandran and P Susheela. RN Jayagopal penned this evergreen love song.
Mostly known for angry young man characters, this film earned Ambareesh the image of an innocent lover.
Talk about the hottest song from the Kannada film industry, Chali Chali Talenu from Chakravyuha (1983) stands on top.
It was made under the prestigious banner of Sri Eswari Productions by N Veeraswamy, father of “Crazy Star” V Ravichandran. The song was composed by Shankar-Ganesh.
It features Ambareesh and Ambika, backed by the voice of legendary singers late SP Balasubrahmanyam and S Janaki.
In the movie, Ambareesh plays an educated man, Amar, who later becomes a police officer with the help of a politician. Later, Amar turns against the corrupt system, thus earning Ambareesh the “Rebel Star” status that became a part of his illustrious career as an actor and, later, as a politician.
Another evergreen hit song from Ambareesh’s movies is Mandyada Gandu from the film Mandyada Gandu (1994).
This low-budget commercial venture is mostly known for its title song — for obvious reasons. This is often the number one choice of song for any occasion for a “Rebel Star” fan! No programme or event that revolves around the late actor is complete without this song being played on stage.
Composed by Upendra Kumar, SP Balasubrahmanyam lent his vocals for this one.
From the 2018 film Ambi Ning Vayassaytho, Hey Jaleela is a special song for the reason that it is based on the popular character Jaleela from Naagarahaavu (1972).
Ambareesh made his debut along with Vishnuvardhan in Naagarahaavu, which is considered one of Sandalwood’s milestones.
Directed by Gurudatha Ganiga, “Rebel Star” played a retired stunt choreographer in Ambi Ning Vayassaytho.
Born in Mandya district of Karnataka, Ambareesh contested elections — both Parliamentary and Legislative — from the district. He even went on to become a Union minister.
Now, his wife Sumalatha Ambareesh, also an actor, represents the Mandya Lok Sabha as an independent MP.
