'Nanpakal Nerath Mayakkam' wins the best film award, 'Nna Thaan Case Kodu' clinch seven, and 'Ela Veezha Poonchira' four awards.
Veteran Malayalam actor Mammootty received the best actor award in the 53rd Kerala State Film Awards for Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam (2022) and Vincy Aloshious bagged the best actress award for her performance in Rekha (2023).
The prestigious awards were announced today, 21 July.
This is the eighth time Mammootty is receiving the Kerala State Awards. He is winning the best actor award (Kerala State) for the sixth time.
Devi Varma, who played the role of Ayisha Rawther in Saudi Vellakka (2022), received the best character award (female).
Nanpakal Nerathu Mayakkam directed by Lijo Jose Pellissery bagged the award for best film.
Mahesh Narayanan was adjudged the best director for Ariyippu (2022).
The award for best debutant director went to Shahi Kabeer for Ela Veezha Poonchira (2022), which also received critical appreciation after its release.
The Best Children’s Film is bagged by Pallotty 90s Kids (2023) and Nna Thaan Case Kodu was adjudged the most popular film. Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval bagged the best script writer award for the movie.
The best screenplay (Adaptation) award was bagged by Rajesh Pinnadan for Oru Thekkan Thallu Case (2022). The best writer award went to Kamal KM for Pada (2022).
Shruthi Sharanyam, director of B 32 Muthal 44 Vare (2022), bagged the Special Jury award under the Women-Transgender category.
It is given for the portrayal of gender equality through the lives of six different women, and its strong political stand that questioned patriarchy.
A special jury mention was received for Kunchacko Boban and Alencier for their performances in Nna Thaan Case Kodu (2022) and Appan (2022) respectively.
Director Jijo Anthony’s Adithattu (2022) starring Prashanth Alexander and Sunny Wayne received the state award for best second film.
The best child artist (male) award went to Master Da Vinci for his role in Pallotty 90s Kids and the best child artist (female) was bagged by Thanmaya Sol for her role in Vazhakku (2022).
Senior music director M Jayachandran won the best music composer for his songs in Ayisha (2023) and Pathonpatham Noottandu (2022).
Manesh Madhavan and Chandru Selvarajan got the best cinematography award for Ela Veezha Poonchira and Vazhakku respectively.
The award for best playback singer female went to Mridula Warrier for her song “Mayilpeeli Ilakunnu” from Pathonpatham Noottandu.
The best payback singer male was clinched by Kapil Kapilan for the song “Kanave Mizhi Unare” from Pallotty 90’s Kids.
While Nna Thaan Case Kodu bagged seven awards, Ela Veezha Poonchira received four and Saudi Vellakka got three in the 53rd Kerala State Film Awards.
A total of 154 movies were submitted for the awards. Of these, 42 films were shortlisted for the second round. Last year, over 142 movies were submitted.
The award jury was led by acclaimed Bengali film director and screenwriter Goutam Ghose, actress Gauthami, cinematographer Hari Nair, singer Jensy Gregory, and sound designer D Yuvaraj.
The awards are presented by the Kerala State Chalachitra Academy.
After receiving the award, Vincy Aloshious told the media that she “was very very happy”.
The 27-year-old actress stated that her movie Rekha wasn’t noticed after its release. “Rekha will get recognition as I got the award now. I had a feeling that Rekha was a good role and would be accepted when I did the movie.”
When asked about her thoughts on Mammootty winning the best actor award, Vincy said she had been a hardcore fan of Mammootty and felt happy to share an award with him.
Kunchako Boban who received the special jury mention, said he was happy to get the award.
“Several quality films were made last year which we are proud of. Nna Than Case Kodu was discussed by people after its release due to its content, the actor noted.
Ratheesh Balakrishnan Poduval, the director of Nna Thaan Case Kodu, stated that it was a good experience shooting the movie and thanked the crew for their support.
Music director M Jayachandran told the media that he didn’t expect the awards.
He received awards for Ayisha and Pathonapatham Noottandu.
“Ayisha was very challenging as it had Indian-Arabian confluence. I gave two years for these two films,” he revealed and congratulated Mridula Warrier for receiving the best female singer award for Pathonpatham Noottandu.
